and of the holy spirit and of the divine gifts. This one who has reigned among all the nations will judge peoples in uprightness, judging each in his own order, since his wonders were announced among all of them, not only in Israel. He will judge them in uprightness, examining not only their works but also their disposition. These things will happen at his second coming, at which time the heavens will be glad and the earth will rejoice. 935 Ps 95,11.12a For an allegorical interpretation, those who bear the image of the heavenly one and have their citizenship in the heavens are the heavens, being gladdened by having drunk their fill of the unmixed wine that comes from the true vine, which wisdom mixed in a crater. Some, being inferior to these heavens, are about to inherit through meekness the high and upward-lying land, which by homonymy, in a metonymic way, being called earth, they rejoice, rejoicing with the joy that is brought to fruit by the holy spirit. And may there be a mind made savage by passions, which through saltiness and bitterness of character and the surging from disordered movements is called a sea; it is fitting for this to be shaken for its benefit, so that from tossing and surging it may change to stability and calm, along with its fullness, for the bitter and disturbed; for the first benefit for those who repent is for the disordered and troubled impulses to die. And souls, by having received the seed of Jesus, being fruitful fields, rejoice with a joy unspeakable and full of glory at reaping in exultation what they sowed in tears. 936 Ps 95,12b-13b The *then* has reference to the world having been set aright by the Lord. The *then* must also be referred back to *Let the heavens be glad*. For when the heavens are glad and the earth rejoices, *then the trees of the forest will rejoice*. The trees of the forest are those not bearing fruit; but these, who were formerly fruitless, bearing fruit, rejoice, running before the Lord coming down hither. For when the Lord comes to judge the earth, then the trees of the forest rejoice, while the trees of the paradise of delight are always glad. But these are not always so (for they are trees of the forest), but when the Lord shines upon them so that they bear edible fruit and become like an apple, as it says in the Song of Songs: *As an apple among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the sons*; for he alone from the beginning, bearing the fruit of virtue, neither knew nor committed sin; for which reason he also imparts his own fruitful quality to the accompanying trees of the forest, in the midst of which he happens to be, an apple. 937 Ps 95,13cδ The inhabited world which he set aright so that it would no longer be shaken, the coming Lord will judge in righteousness. And he will judge in truth also the peoples among whom his wonders have occurred, so that to the inhabited world he may bestow the reward of holiness, having been judged according to worth, and to the peoples he may grant perfect knowledge, so that they may no longer know in part but may approach face to face him who is truth, both perfectly receiving and beholding it.

938 Ps 96,1 By the hand of the capable one (and this is the spiritual David who is from

his seed according to the flesh) the earth is established, every disturbance and warlike tumult having been destroyed by him; or the earth is established, receiving a constitution inasmuch as it has received seed to bear fruit a hundredfold and sixtyfold and thirtyfold, from those who sowed for themselves in righteousness so that the fruits of righteousness from what was sown by Jesus might multiply. For this reason also the Lord reigns, not having come to reign from not reigning at all, but having come to his kingdom from not ruling over sinners, who have repented. Therefore all the earth rejoices, being commanded to do this because the Lord has become king of all of it. And in addition to the restored earth rejoicing, the islands also will be glad, that is, those who dwell in them
