worthy, who are now 5.12.9 called Franks. Next to these dwelt the Arboruchi, who together with all the rest of Gaul and indeed Spain 5.12.10 were subjects of the Romans from of old. And after them toward the rising sun the Thoringian barbarians, by grant of 5.12.11 Augustus, the first emperor, were settled. And not far from them the Burgundians dwelt, turned toward the south wind, and the Suevi beyond the Thoringians, and the Alamanni, powerful nations. All these were settled in this region from ancient times as autonomous peoples. 5.12.12 But as time went on, the Visigoths, having overpowered the Roman rule, held all of Spain and the parts of Gaul beyond the Rhone river, making them subject to themselves for the payment 5.12.13 of tribute. The Arboruchi at that time happened to have become Roman soldiers. These the Germans, wishing to make them their subjects, since they were their neighbors and had changed the form of government which they formerly had, began to plunder and marched against them with all their forces to make war. 5.12.14 But the Arboruchi, displaying both valor and loyalty toward the Romans, proved to be brave men in this war, and since the Germans were not able to overcome them by force, they saw fit to make them comrades and to become kin by marriage. 5.12.15 This the Arboruchi accepted not at all unwillingly. For it happened that both were Christians, and so, having come together into one people, they advanced to a great 5.12.16 degree of power. And other Roman soldiers also had been stationed on the frontiers of Gaul for the purpose of guarding them. 5.12.17 These men, having no way to return to Rome and moreover not wanting to go over to their enemies, who were Arians, gave themselves together with their standards and the land they had long been guarding for the Romans to the Arboruchi and the Germans, and having passed everything down to their own descendants, they preserved their ancestral customs, 5.12.18 which indeed they revere and see fit to observe even to my time. For to this day they are identified from the military rolls in which they were anciently enrolled when they went on campaign, and carrying their own standards they thus enter into battle, 5.12.19 and they always use their ancestral laws. And they preserve the Roman style in all other things and in their footwear. 5.12.20 So long, then, as the same government remained for the Romans, the emperor held the parts of Gaul inside the Rhone river; but when Odoacer changed it into a tyranny, then indeed, with the tyrant yielding it to them, the Visigoths held all of Gaul as far as the Alps, which separate the boundaries of the Gauls 5.12.21 and the Ligurians. And when Odoacer had fallen, both the Thoringians and the Visigoths, fearing the power of the Germans which was already growing (for it had become exceedingly populous and openly did violence to whoever was in their way), were eager to secure the alliance of the Goths and Theoderic. And Theoderic, wishing to make them his comrades, did not refuse to enter into marriage-alliances with them. 5.12.22 So to Alaric the younger, who was then leader of the Visigoths, he betrothed his own daughter Theodichusa, a virgin, and to Hermenefrid, the ruler of the Thoringians, Amalaverga, 5.12.23 the child of his sister Amalafrida. And from that time the Franks refrained from violence against them for fear of Theoderic, 5.12.24 but went to war against the Burgundians. Later, alliances and treaties were made between the Franks and the Goths to the detriment of the Burgundians, on the condition 5.12.25 that each should send an army against them; but if one of them should be left behind, and the others, having campaigned, should destroy the race of the Burgundians and subdue the land which they hold, the victors should receive from those who did not join the campaign a stipulated sum of gold, and that the conquered land should in this way be common to both. 5.12.26 The Germans, accordingly, came with a great army against the Burgundians in accordance with their agreement with the Goths, but Theoderic, while he made preparations in word, yet deliberately always put off the departure of the army to the next day, watching to see what would happen. 5.12.27 And sending with difficulty, he commanded the leaders of the army to make their march more slowly, and if they should hear that the Franks had been victorious, for the rest, according to
