would survive. The sum of my words is that there is nothing that will persuade me, just as before, to hold on to the governance of affairs. And so that I may make what I say manifest by deeds, rising from my usual seat, I will sit upon another, so that both the empress and you may know that there is now nothing preventing you from appointing to affairs another, whomever you yourselves wish.” Having spoken thus, he moved to another place, as if by this act yielding the rule to another. The patriarch, seeing and hearing such things, said, “This word is harsh 2.31 and most able to pierce the empress’s soul.” And he said, “You speak the truth, and indeed nothing of the sort should have been either said or done. But now I have been driven to such a point of necessity that, although I wished most of all, for her consolation and for the relief of the many troubles that have befallen the empress from the emperor's death, that all these things be said in her presence, I am acting most contrary to myself for two reasons. For it is necessary either to be completely inactive, or to rule badly and not as is fitting. Therefore, if I do nothing, and the empress were to remain at ease, thinking, as she did yesterday and the day before, that the government is being administered by me, it is necessary that all be lost. And if I rule badly and not as is required, it happens that in the same way again all is destroyed, and in addition I myself will owe penalties for my wickedness not only to others but also to myself. So for both reasons it is advantageous that these things become known to the empress, even if they are likely to cause disturbance and grief. For it is better that she, having learned how things stand concerning what is happening, should take counsel with you and the others about what is necessary for the government, than that, being ignorant, she should a little later be vexed not only because of these things, but also because of the harm that will ensue. 4. The patriarch, therefore, reported everything to the empress. But she, hearing things she would never have conceived of herself nor been persuaded of if another had said them, at first from her grief was not even able 2.32 to utter a sound in reply. Then, after shedding many tears from her eyes in silence for a considerable time, she said, “One could more easily persuade a mountain that it can be moved than that the opinion of the Grand Domestic could be changed even a little. But since it is now possible to hear such things about him, things which I would never even have considered, I am at a loss for a suitable defense. Nevertheless, from those things that pierce my soul most deeply, I shall make a beginning of my defense. I say, therefore, to him that just now you have brought me to a sense of the terrible things that surround me, as if I were out of my mind or held fast by a deep stupor and sleep. For previously, although I knew the emperor's death most clearly, nevertheless, when you came in to me, I thought that he too, as was his custom, came in with you and followed you as you departed, and I reckoned that he all but spoke when you were speaking to me, and on the whole I considered the onset of evils that surrounded me to be somehow moderate. But now, as if some curtain has been raised, all things within are revealed; thus you, having deprived us of the hopes by which we were being deceived, have made us see things stripped bare, and to consider my children orphans of their father, and myself held fast by widowhood and the evils resulting from it. But what could one say or even think about you? Whether that you have forgotten the supreme bond and 2.33 that wondrous friendship of the emperor for you, which the many could not even believe because of its magnitude? But I do not think you would be able, even if you very much wished to. For I think that if someone, taking up all friendship among men, should then wish to look for some paradigm from which others and he himself might perceive its strength, he would pass you two alone by, as having even surpassed its bounds, and would try first to discover what it might be from the rest. To such an extent did you leave behind not only friends, but also the very idea of friendship itself. And this was to be seen not only from deeds, but one could also hear the emperor saying many times that he put his friendship for you before his dearest ones and his wife and all his possessions, so to speak. Whether, then, you have forgotten the emperor's friendship, not even to the one who is overly slanderous the
