256.1 I, having heard of that grievous persecution that has risen up against you, and that immediately after Easter those who fasted for judgments and battles came upon your tents and handed over your labors to the fire, preparing for you the house in heaven not made with hands, but storing up for themselves the fire which they used to your harm, I groaned at what happened, not sympathizing with you, brothers, may it not be so, but with those who have been so plunged in wickedness as to extend their own malice to such a degree. But I expected that you would all immediately run to a ready refuge, our lowliness; and I had hope that the Lord would give me respite from my continuous pains in embracing you, and, by receiving in this idle body of mine the good sweat which you pour out for the truth, I would have some fellowship in the prizes laid up for you by the Judge of truth. But since this did not even enter your mind, nor did you expect to have any rest from us, I desired at least to find continuous pretexts for letters to you, so that, just like those who shout encouragement to the contestants, I too might shout something to you through letters to exhort you in your good contest. But not even this was easy for us for two reasons: one, that we did not know where you are staying, and the other, that there are not many who depart from us to you. But now the Lord has brought to us the most desired and most devout brother Sanctissimus the fellow-presbyter, through whom we both greet your love and beseech you to pray for us, rejoicing and exulting that your reward is great in the heavens, and, as having boldness before the Lord, not to cease night and day crying to him that this turmoil of the Churches may cease, that the shepherds may be given back to the peoples, and that the Church may return to her proper dignity. For I am persuaded that if a voice is found to prevail upon the good God, he will not long delay his mercies, but will henceforth provide for us with the temptation also the way of escape, that we may be able to bear it. Greet all the brotherhood in Christ from us.
257.t TO THE MONKS HARD-PRESSED BY THE ARIANS
257.1 What I said to myself when I heard about the trial brought upon you by the enemies of God, these things I thought it well to report to you also by letter, because in a time thought to be peaceful you have acquired for yourselves the blessing laid up for those who are persecuted for the name of Christ. For just because a pleasant and gentle name is attached to those who do evil things, one must not for this reason think that their deeds are not those of enemies. For I judge the war from those of our own kind to be more grievous, because it is easy to guard against enemies who have been proclaimed beforehand, but to those mingled among us we are necessarily exposed to every harm; which you also have suffered. For your fathers were also persecuted, but by idolaters; and their livelihood was plundered and their houses were overthrown and they themselves were exiled by those who openly made war on us for the name of Christ. But the persecutors who have now appeared hate us no less than they did, but for the deception of the many they put forward the name of Christ, so that the persecuted might not even have the consolation from their confession, since many of the more simple people, while admitting that we are wronged, do not reckon our death for the truth as a martyrdom. Wherefore I am persuaded that a greater reward is laid up for us by the righteous Judge than for those who were martyrs then, since they also had the acknowledged approval from men
