Augustus defeated both Antony and Cleopatra, being declared monarch at that time. The great Theodosius therefore brought the great Arsenius from Rome at the beginning of his reign, having heard about his wisdom and divine knowledge, and to him he gave his sons Arcadius and Honorius, to be educated by him in the holy scriptures; whom he also made father to the emperors. This man, praying to God at night, heard a voice saying to him, "Arsenius, flee from men, and you will be saved." This Theodosius demolished to the ground all the pagan temples, which the great Constantine had ordered only to be closed. And having fallen ill in Mediolanum he fell asleep in the Lord, being 60 years old, having reigned for 10 years, leaving behind his two sons, Arcadius the elder of the East, and Honorius of the West with Placidia. And Honorius held the palace in Ravenna, and Placidia, the daughter of Gratian, in 1.574 Rome. And Arcadius brought his body to Constantinople, placing it in the church of the Holy Apostles. And Nectarius held the archiepiscopal see, in the year of the world #22εωπηʹ, of the divine incarnation 304. Arcadius the son of the great Theodosius reigned for 14 years. In his 5th year he built the great portico opposite the praetorium. And Arcadius was most unsightly in the shape of his body, dark in complexion, most wretched in stature, having only one advantage, that of writing well, in which he had been instructed by the great Arsenius. In his time the relics of the holy prophet, forerunner, and baptist John were transferred to Alexandria. And he also created his own troop in Constantinople, which he called the Arcadians. In his second year, Chrysostom is ordained in Constantinople, to whom Libanius also bore witness. For when his students asked whom he would place in charge of the school in his stead, he said, "John, if he had not been stolen by the Christians." In the same year a son is born to Arcadius by Eudoxia the Augusta, Theodosius the younger, whom John Chrysostom received in holy baptism. In the 8th year, Gainas acted as a tyrant against Arcadius, and inflicted many evils on Byzantium. And having taken and given oaths in the church of Saint Euphemia in Chalcedon, he broke them, and entering the city he turned to pillage and other outrages. Then, 1.575 having gone out to the Thracian Chersonese and having made rafts, he proceeds toward the eastern cities. And when a great war broke out both on land and sea, he perished along with his own troops. And while Chrysostom was directing the affairs of the orthodox church, a certain man from the heresy of the Macedonians came to him, having repented. And having also urged his own wife to turn back and repent and receive communion, he barely convinced her, as it were. But she, having given her maidservant the communion of the Macedonians, ordered her to have it with her. And so approaching Chrysostom, and receiving the holy communion from his hands, pretending to partake of it, she gave it to the maidservant, and taking that of the Macedonians she brings it to her mouth, and finds it has become a stone. Shuddering therefore, she falls before the saint, trembling, confessing her audacity and sincerely approaching the church. And Cyril, the most holy archbishop of Alexandria, was the nephew of Theophilus according to the flesh. For some time he himself, being a slave to prejudice as a man, and following Theophilus as his uncle, both thought and spoke evil things against Chrysostom; but since it was zeal, even if not according to knowledge, and not envy nor diabolical opposition that was fighting, for this reason he was judged worthy of correction by a certain mystical revelation, in which he seemed to be in a certain fearful and most beautiful place, in which multitudes of holy angels 1.576 stood by the Mother of God, and very near her, the great Chrysostom. where Cyril, having tried to approach, was pushed away by the command of John, but the mother of the Lord interceding for him and asking that he be accepted, as not a few things for the
