to turn back, but would stand bravely against them. But whenever they see them approaching and hear the trumpet signaling engagement, they are no longer able to remain even in the battle line, but flee shamefully and ignobly, caring little for their former oaths and boasts. And I also hear of a Persian proverb spoken very rightly and wisely concerning the nature of women. For they say that even if a woman's head reaches to the clouds, it touches the earth no less than before; signifying, I think, by this saying, that even if she reaches the height of wisdom and magnanimity and courage, she is no less than before a woman, being subject to the natural and womanly passions. All these things wear me out as I remember them and create a great disturbance in my soul, lest the empress, suffering some womanly thing, not only I myself, but also all the Romans will encounter many evils and fall into the uttermost dangers. For which reason indeed I first remind you, who perhaps have not yourself forgotten, of the good things done for you by me, how you have come to this point of glory and honor through our friendship and zeal, not 2.49 only with my having enrolled you from great obscurity among the imperial clergy and having deemed you worthy of much providence not only from my own house but also from the imperial funds, and, when the time was not opportune, with me being the first to mention it and having persuaded the emperor to raise you to the patriarchal throne, but also when all the chief priests by common consent were rejecting it, with me having used great eagerness and zeal towards them, so as to persuade them to entrust this illustrious and much-contested see, and indeed most recently, when you were in danger over it and about to be deprived of it, with me alone having sufficed for your deliverance from these difficulties. I have recounted these things now, not having chosen to reproach you with my benefactions—for such a thing is not dear to me, not even if they were many times more and greater—but in order that I might show that to me, who have from the beginning been friendly disposed toward you and have provided many proofs of my affection for you, it is right for you also, now that circumstances have provided the opportunity, to appear grateful to the friend who was formerly seen to be so freely, and to give worthy returns for the former benefactions. Not only for these reasons themselves, but also because you, being our common spiritual father, owe as much care to me as to each of your flock—or rather, many times more than to almost all of them together, inasmuch as all will enjoy their share of the benefit or harm that comes to me. And this is what I ask of you, that since I myself am necessarily occupied with campaigns abroad—for it is neither seemly for me 2.50 nor advantageous for you for me to sit here and look on while the enemies plunder our fields and besiege our cities and enslave those they encounter—you give no opportunity to the slanderers and spoilers and common enemies, who will always be here with the empress, so that they might be able to contrive slanders against me and persuade her to pay attention to them, as if they were counseling rightly and profitably, and to consider me an enemy and one plotting against her for the rule; but that you, holding to what is just on my behalf, should dissolve their schemes and render their villainies and plots ineffective, persuading the empress of nothing else than not to condemn me in my absence, but, having been called to trial and having obtained an opportunity for defense, either to refute the charges, if I can, or to pay the penalty for injustice, if I am convicted of perjury. And for such zeal and eagerness you will receive your rewards not only from God, as one who has been zealous for peace and the common salvation and for justice itself, but also that I myself will be very grateful to you and all men of account will praise you, because you are doing the work of a guardian and protector of souls, showing by your very deeds that you are a disciple of the Peacemaker and are made like him according to your power, at least as far as it depends on you, by dissolving every pretext for civil war. having discoursed such things also to the patriarch
