of things that concern us; for it discourses with you both concerning things present and things to come, and concerning things seen, and concerning the unseen creation. And if you wish to learn about heaven, whether it remains as it is or changes, it will clearly answer you and say, that The heavens shall grow old like a garment, and like a mantle you, O God, shall roll them up, and they shall be changed. And if you wish to hear about its shape, you will hear again: Who stretches out the heaven like a curtain. And if anyone should wish to know more about its upper parts, it will tell you again: Who covers His upper chambers with waters. And it does not stop there, but it also discourses with you about its breadth and height, showing that these are of equal measure; For, it says, as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our iniquities from us. According to the height of heaven from the earth, the Lord has made His mercy mighty toward those who fear Him. And if you should inquire about the foundations of the earth, it will not hide these from you either, but you will hear it singing and saying, For upon the seas 60.652 He has founded it. And if you desire to learn whence earthquakes happen, it will free you from all perplexity, saying thus: Who looks upon the earth, and makes it tremble. And if you should seek the purpose of the night, you will know this also, having learned from it that In it all the beasts of the forest will roam about. And where the mountains are useful, it answers you: The high mountains are for the deer. And why the rocks, it tells you: The rock is a refuge for the rock-badgers and the hares. Why the fruitless trees, learn: There the sparrows will make their nests. Why springs in the deserts? Upon them the birds of the air will dwell, and the beasts of the field. Why wine? Not only that you may drink, since the nature of water would have sufficed, but that you may also be gladdened and delighted; for Wine gladdens the heart of man. And having learned this, you will also know up to what point one must use wine. From where are the birds fed, and the wild beasts? You will hear it saying: All things look to You to give them their food in due season. And if you should say, Why the cattle? it answers you that these too are for your sake: For He makes grass to grow, it says, for the cattle, and green herb for the service of men. What need have you of the moon? Hear it saying: He made the moon for seasons. And that He made created all things seen and unseen, this too it clearly taught, saying: He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created. And that there will be a release from death, this too it teaches you, saying: God will redeem my soul from the hand of Hades, when He receives me. Whence has our body come? and this it says: He remembered that we are dust. Where does it go again? He will return to his dust. Why all these things? For you. For You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of your hands. Do we men have anything in common with the angels? This too it says, singing thus: You have made him a little lower than the angels. Concerning the love of God: As a father has compassion on his sons, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. Concerning those who will succeed us after these things, and that untroubled end: Return, it says, O my soul, to your rest. Why is the heaven so great? This too it will say, that The heavens declare the glory of God. Why were night and day made? Not only that they might give light and rest, but also that they might instruct; For there are no speeches nor words, whose voices are not heard. How does the sea surround the earth? The deep as a garment is its covering; for so the Hebrew has it. 3. And taking a starting point from what has been said, you will know all other things too: those concerning Christ, concerning the resurrection, concerning the life to come, concerning rest, concerning punishment, all things concerning moral discourses, concerning doctrines, and you will find the book filled with countless good things. And if you fall into temptations, you will receive much comfort from it; if into sins, you will find countless medicines laid up there; if into poverty, if into affliction, you will see many harbors; if you are righteous, you will reap much security from there; if

Κἂν περὶ οὐρανοῦ θέλῃς μαθεῖν, πότερον μένει τοιοῦτος ἢ μεταβάλλεται, σαφῶς ἀποκρινεῖταί σοι καὶ ἐρεῖ, ὅτι Οἱ οὐρανοὶ ὡς ἱμάτιον παλαιωθήσονται, καὶ ὡσεὶ περιβόλαιον ἑλίξεις αὐτοὺς, ὁ Θεὸς, καὶ ἀλλαγήσονται. Καὶ περὶ τοῦ σχήματος ἂν θέλῃς ἀκοῦσαι, ἀκούσῃ πάλιν· Ὁ ἐκτείνων τὸν οὐρανὸν ὡσεὶ δέῤῥιν. Κἂν περὶ τῶν νώτων αὐτοῦ βουληθῇ τις πλέον εἰδέναι, ἐρεῖ σοι πάλιν· Ὁ στεγάζων ἐν ὕδασι τὰ ὑπερῷα αὐτοῦ. Κἂν περὶ τῶν σεισμῶν ἐπιθυμήσῃς μαθεῖν πόθεν γίνονται, ἀπαλλάξει σε πάσης ἀπορίας, οὕτω λέγων· Ὁ ἐπιβλέπων ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ ποιῶν αὐτὴν τρέμειν. Κἂν τῆς νυκτὸς ζητήσῃς τὴν χρείαν, καὶ ταύτην εἴσῃ παρ' αὐτοῦ μαθὼν, ὅτι Ἐν αὐτῇ διελεύσονται πάντα τὰ θηρία τοῦ δρυμοῦ. Καὶ τὰ ὄρη ποῦ χρήσιμα, ἀποκρίνεταί σοι· Ὄρη τὰ ὑψηλὰ τοῖς ἐλάφοις. Καὶ διὰ τί αἱ πέτραι, λέγει σοι· Πέτρα καταφυγὴ τοῖς χοιρογρυλλίοις καὶ τοῖς λαγωοῖς. ∆ιὰ τί τὰ ἄκαρπα δένδρα, μάθε· Ἐκεῖ στρουθία ἐννοσσεύσουσι. ∆ιὰ τί ἐν ἐρήμοις πηγαί; Ἐπ' αὐτὰ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκηνώσει, καὶ τὰ θηρία τοῦ ἀγροῦ. ∆ιὰ τί οἶνος; Οὐχ ἵνα πίνῃς μόνον, ἐπεὶ ἤρκει καὶ ἡ τοῦ ὕδατος φύσις, ἀλλ' ἵνα καὶ εὐφρανθῇς καὶ ἡσθῇς· Οἶνος γὰρ εὐφραίνει καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου. Τοῦτο δὲ μαθὼν, εἴσῃ καὶ μέχρι ποῦ τῷ οἴνῳ κεχρῆσθαι δεῖ. Πόθεν τρέφεται τὰ πετεινὰ, καὶ τὰ ἄγρια θηρία; Ἀκούσῃ λέγοντος· Πάντα πρὸς σὲ προσδοκῶσι δοῦναι τὴν τροφὴν αὐτοῖς εἰς εὔκαιρον. Κἂν εἴπῃς, ∆ιὰ τί τὰ κτήνη; ἀποκρίνεταί σοι, ὅτι καὶ ταῦτα διὰ σέ· Ὁ ἐξανατέλλων γὰρ, φησὶ, χόρτον τοῖς κτήνεσι, καὶ χλόην τῇ δουλείᾳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων. Τί τῆς σελήνης σοι χρεία; Ἄκουσον αὐτοῦ λέγοντος· Ἐποίησε σελήνην εἰς καιρούς. Καὶ ὅτι ἐποίησε γενητὰ πάντα τὰ ὁρώμενα καὶ τὰ μὴ ὁρώμενα, καὶ τοῦτο σαφῶς ἐδίδαξεν εἰπών· Αὐτὸς εἶπε, καὶ ἐγενήθησαν· αὐτὸς ἐνετείλατο, καὶ ἐκτίσθησαν. Καὶ ὅτι θανάτου λύσις ἔσται, καὶ τοῦτό σε διδάσκει λέγων· Ὁ Θεὸς λυτρώσεται τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ χειρὸς ᾅδου, ὅταν λαμβάνῃ με. Πόθεν τὸ σῶμα ἡμῖν γέγονε; καὶ τοῦτο λέγει· Ἐμνήσθη ὅτι χοῦς ἐσμεν. Ποῦ πάλιν ἀπέρχεται; Ἐπιστρέψει εἰς τὸν χοῦν αὐτοῦ. ∆ιὰ τί ταῦτα πάντα; ∆ιὰ σέ. ∆όξῃ γὰρ καὶ τιμῇ ἐστεφάνωσας αὐτὸν, καὶ κατέστησας αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σου. Εἰ ἔχομέν τι κοινὸν πρὸς τοὺς ἀγγέλους οἱ ἄνθρωποι; Καὶ τοῦτο λέγει ψάλλων οὕτως· Ἠλάττωσας αὐτὸν βραχύ τι παρ' ἀγγέλους. Περὶ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Θεοῦ· Καθὼς οἰκτείρει πατὴρ υἱοὺς, ᾠκτείρησε Κύριος τοὺς φοβουμένους αὐτόν. Περὶ τῶν μετὰ ταῦτα διαδεξομένων ἡμᾶς, καὶ τῆς ἀταράχου λήξεως ἐκείνης· Ἐπίστρεψον, φησὶ, ψυχή μου, εἰς τὴν ἀνάπαυσίν σου. ∆ιὰ τί οὕτω μέγας ὁ οὐρανός; Καὶ τοῦτο ἐρεῖ, ὅτι Οἱ οὐρανοὶ διηγοῦνται δόξαν Θεοῦ. ∆ιὰ τί νὺξ καὶ ἡμέρα ἐγένετο; Οὐχ ἵνα φαίνωσι καὶ ἀναπαύωσι μόνον, ἀλλ' ἵνα καὶ παιδεύωσιν· Οὐ γάρ εἰσι λαλιαὶ οὐδὲ λόγοι, ὧν οὐχὶ ἀκούονται αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν. Πῶς ἡ θάλασσα περίκειται τῇ γῇ; Ἄβυσσος ὡς ἱμάτιον τὸ περιβόλαιον αὐτῆς· οὕτω γὰρ τὸ Ἑβραϊκὸν ἔχει. γʹ. Ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν εἰρημένων ἀρχὴν λαβόντες καὶ τὰ ἄλλα πάντα εἴσεσθε, τὰ περὶ Χριστοῦ, τὰ περὶ ἀναστάσεως, τὰ περὶ τῆς μελλούσης ζωῆς, τὰ περὶ ἀναπαύσεως, τὰ περὶ κολάσεως, τὰ περὶ τῶν ἠθικῶν λόγων, τὰ περὶ τῶν δογμάτων ἅπαντα, καὶ μυρίων ἀγαθῶν ἐμπεπλησμένον τὸ βιβλίον εὑρήσετε. Κἂν εἰς πειρασμοὺς ἐμπέσῃς, πολλὴν ἐντεῦθεν λήψῃ παραμυθίαν· κἂν εἰς ἁμαρτήματα, μυρία φάρμακα κείμενα ἐνταῦθα εὑρήσεις· ἂν εἰς πενίαν, ἂν εἰς θλῖψιν, πολλοὺς τοὺς λιμένας ὄψει· κἂν δίκαιος ᾖς, πολλὴν ἀσφάλειαν ἐκεῖθεν καρπώσῃ· κἂν
