you may be a sinner, great is the 60.653 consolation. For if you are righteous, and suffer terrible things, you will hear him saying, that For your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. All these things have come upon us, and we have not forgotten you. And if your good deeds lift you up, you will hear him saying: Enter not into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no one living will be justified; and you will immediately be humbled. And if you are a sinner, and have despaired of yourself, you will hear him constantly chanting: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation; and you will rise up quickly. And if you have a diadem upon your head, and are high-minded, you will learn that A king is not saved by a great force, and a giant will not be saved by the abundance of his strength; and you will be able to be moderate. If you are rich and renowned, again you will hear the Psalmist: Woe to those who trust in their own strength, and boast in the abundance of their wealth; and, that Man, his days are like grass; like a flower of the field, so he flourishes; and, His glory will not descend after him; and you will consider nothing on earth to be great. For that which is most brilliant of all, glory and power, when it is so worthless, what else on earth could be worthy of mention? But are you in despondency? Hear him saying, Why are you so sorrowful, O my soul, and why do you trouble me? Hope in 60.654 God, for I will give thanks to him. But do you see those who prosper undeservedly? Say, Be not envious of evildoers, for they shall soon be dried up like the grass, and shall quickly fall away like the green herb. Do you see both the righteous and sinners being punished? Hear that it is not for the same reason; For many, it says, are the scourges of the sinner. But concerning the righteous, he did not say, The scourges, but, Many are the afflictions of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver them out of them all; and again, The death of sinners is evil; and, Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Say these things continually, be instructed by them; for each of these sayings has a vast ocean of meanings. For we have run through them simply; but if you wish to investigate what has been said with accuracy, you will see great wealth. But for now, even from what has been said, it is possible to be cleansed of the passions that beset us. For when it permits one neither to envy, nor to be grieved and despondent unseasonably, nor to consider wealth or affliction or poverty anything, nor even to think that life itself is anything, it frees you from all the passions. For these things let us give thanks to God, and let us handle this treasure, so that through the patience and the comfort of the Scriptures we might have hope, and enjoy the good things to come; of which may it be granted to all of us to attain, by grace and loving-kindness, and so forth.

HOMILY 29.

But I am persuaded, my brethren, I myself also, concerning you, that you yourselves are full

of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish others. 1. He said, that Inasmuch as I am an apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry; he said, that Lest he not spare you either; he said, Do not be wise in your own conceits; and again, But you, why do you judge your brother? and, Who are you that judges another's servant? and many other such things. Since, therefore, in many places he made his discourse rather harsh, he now remedies it; and what he said at the beginning, this he also says at the end. At the beginning he said: I thank my God for you all, that your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world; but here, I am persuaded, he says, that you are full of goodness, able also to admonish others; which is more than that. And he did not say, I have heard, but, I am persuaded, and I do not need to learn from another, but I myself, that is, the one who rebukes, the one who accuses. And That you are full of goodness. This with respect to the

Ὁρᾷς καὶ δικαίους καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὺς κολαζομένους; Ἄκουσον ὅτι οὐχ ἡ αὐτὴ αἰτία· Πολλαὶ γὰρ, φησὶν, αἱ μάστιγες τοῦ ἁμαρτωλοῦ. Ἐπὶ δὲ τῶν δικαίων οὐκ εἶπεν, Αἱ μάστιγες, ἀλλὰ, Πολλαὶ αἱ θλίψεις τῶν δικαίων, καὶ ἐκ πασῶν αὐτῶν ῥύσεται αὐτοὺς ὁ Κύριος· καὶ πάλιν, Θάνατος ἁμαρτωλῶν πονηρός· καὶ, Τίμιος ἐναντίον Κυρίου ὁ θάνατος τῶν ὁσίων αὐτοῦ. Ταῦτα λέγε συνεχῶς, ἐντεῦθεν παιδεύου· τούτων γὰρ ἕκαστον τῶν ῥημάτων πέλαγος ἀχανὲς ἔχει νοημάτων. Ἡμεῖς μὲν γὰρ ἁπλῶς αὐτὰ παρεδράμομεν· εἰ δὲ βουληθείητε μετὰ ἀκριβείας διερευνήσασθαι τὰ εἰρημένα, πολὺν ὄψεσθε τὸν πλοῦτον. Ἀλλὰ τέως καὶ ἐκ τῶν εἰρημένων δυνατὸν καθαίρεσθαι τῶν ἐπικειμένων παθῶν. ὅταν γὰρ μήτε φθονεῖν ἐᾷ, μήτε λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀθυμεῖν ἀκαίρως, μήτε ἡγεῖσθαί τι πλοῦτον μήτε θλῖψιν μήτε πενίαν, μηδὲ αὐτὴν τὴν ζωὴν νομίζειν τι εἶναι, πάντων σε ἀπαλλάττει τῶν παθῶν. Ὑπὲρ δὲ τούτων εὐχαριστήσωμεν τῷ Θεῷ, καὶ τὸν θησαυρὸν μεταχειριζώμεθα, Ἵνα διὰ τῆς ὑπομονῆς καὶ τῆς παρακλήσεως τῶν Γραφῶν τὴν ἐλπίδα ἔχωμεν, καὶ τῶν μελλόντων ἀπολαύσωμεν ἀγαθῶν· ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ, καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς.

ΟΜΙΛΙΑ ΚΘʹ.

Πέπεισμαι δὲ, ἀδελφοί μου, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐγὼ περὶ ὑμῶν, ὅτι καὶ αὐτοὶ μεστοί

ἐστε ἀγαθωσύνης, πεπληρωμένοι πάσης γνώσεως, δυνάμενοι καὶ ἄλλους νουθετεῖν. αʹ. Εἶπεν, ὅτι Ἐφ' ὅσον εἰμὶ ἐθνῶν ἀπόστολος, τὴν διακονίαν μου δοξάζω· εἶπεν, ὅτι Μήπως οὐδὲ σοῦ φείσηται· εἶπε, Μὴ γίνεσθε φρόνιμοι παρ' ἑαυτοῖς· καὶ πάλιν, Σὺ δὲ τί κρίνεις τὸν ἀδελφόν σου; καὶ, Σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ κρίνων ἀλλότριον οἰκέτην; καὶ ἕτερα πολλῷ πλείονα τοιαῦτα. Ἐπεὶ οὖν πολλαχοῦ τὸν λόγον τραχύτερον ἐποίησε, θεραπεύει λοιπόν· καὶ ὅπερ ἀρχόμενος ἔλεγε, τοῦτο καὶ τελευτῶν.
