He who remains in love remains in God. And after the death of John, a certain holy bishop, Adelphius by name, said that he had unbearable grief, because such a man, the teacher of the world, who gladdened the church of God with his words, fell asleep outside his throne. Therefore I beseeched God with many tears that he might show him to me, in what state he is, and if he was ranked with the patriarchs. Therefore praying this for a long time, on one occasion I was in an ecstasy and I saw a certain very handsome man, holding me by the right hand, who led me away to a bright and most glorious place and showed me the teachers of the church. But I, he says, was looking around to see the one I desired, the great John, my beloved. So when he showed me all of them and said the name of each, holding me again by the hand he led me out. But I, being grieved, followed him, not having seen John among the saints with the fathers. So as I was going out, the one standing at the door stopped me and says to me, "No one entering here goes out from here grieving." Then I say to him, "This is my grief, that my most beloved John, the bishop of Constantinople, I have not seen with the other teachers of the church." And he again says to me, "Do you mean John of repentance?" I say to him, yes. And he answered and says to me, "A man being in the flesh 1.585 cannot see him; for he stands where the master's throne is." Thus the thrice-blessed John, after countless toils and labors, having completed his life, passed over to heavenly blessedness, having lived 52 years in all. And during his exile the people of the city set fire to the church. But as others say, that fire coming out from the altar burned everything down. And many were endangered for John's sake. And Arsacius succeeds Chrysostom. And in the same year Eudoxia also dies, who was joined in marriage to the emperor Arcadius and had become for him a cause of many evils, being a barbarian woman and bold-hearted. And he had children by her: Pulcheria, then Flaccilla, Arcadia and Marina, who died during their time without experience of marriage; and with them she bears Theodosius last, who also succeeded to his father's kingdom. And after the passage of 35 years the great Chrysostom was brought back from Comana, through the just zeal of Proclus the bishop of Constantinople. But Eudoxia had died not long after, as has been said, having survived him by only three months. For while she was pregnant and already hastening toward the very act of giving birth, the infant died in her womb, and when she began to be in labor, the infant did not proceed to birth, but remained inside dead for four whole days. Therefore when it putrefied, the womb also detached, and there was no passage for the embryo and no release from the pains. But when a certain man placed on her an enchanted little scroll, she immediately 1.586 miscarried, and with the expulsion of the embryo the thrice-wretched one also ruptured her own soul. In the 14th year in Rome the earth rumbled for seven days. And Arcadius also dies, having lived 31 years, and having reigned for 20; who also arranged for the king of the Persians, Isdigerdes, to take care of his son Theodosius and to receive a gift of one thousand pounds of gold. But before his death he killed all the best men who were with him, because their spirit was greater, among whom was also Rufinus, who had great power with him. And his body was placed in the church of the Holy Apostles, in the southern portico, where his wife Eudoxia also was.
Isdigerdes therefore, having received the will of Arcadius, peacefully preserved the kingdom for Theodosius. And having sent a certain Antiochus, a wonderful and most learned man, as a guardian and tutor, he writes to the senate of the Romans to keep the child safe from plots, lest a truceless war against the Romans
