Of the material and immaterial; for material are the things which you see, but immaterial are the angels. Between these, therefore, I say to you, is the living being man, and he is twofold: among perceptible things he is immaterial, but among immaterial things he is perceptible. I made him, therefore, as a perceptible being, the lord and master of the things that are seen, subjecting all visible things as servants to him alone, so that he might see my works and glorify me, the creator; and as a rational being and one who sees intellectually, I have given him to see me and by this to stand in the dignity of the angels. Look, understand what I have said to you: man, being twofold, saw with his perceptible eyes my creations, but with his intellectual eyes he saw the face of me, the creator, he beheld my glory and spoke with me every hour. But when, transgressing my commandment, he ate from the tree, he was blinded and came to be in the darkness (387) of death, as I said, which is called being hidden; for he foolishly supposed this at that time. For where could he hide from me, or in what place, say? But you now reason worse, more foolishly than he, that I am hiding, not wanting to be seen by you at all. For if I do not want to be seen, why did I appear in the flesh? And why did I descend at all? And why was I seen by all? Do not be ignorant of my deeds, nor of my economies; Adam, having been blinded, was first reproved and taught
