The great Symeon, that is, like the sun sent forth his rays everywhere, and it was possible to see Iberians and Armenians and Persians and Ishmaelites arriving daily and enjoying holy baptism. Therefore, the wondrous one sent forth such great grace to all the nations that they brought the idols of their ancestral gods before that holy pillar and smashed them, and were instructed in the pure and blameless faith of us Christians by the great Symeon, leading them into the citizenship of Christ through many miracles and very great wonders. Rightly, therefore, did the Lord say, "He who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do," who, being illuminated by the splendor of the 1.598 Holy Spirit and sending forth the rays of grace everywhere according to the great Basil. For he says, "Just as bright and transparent bodies, when a ray falls upon them, become themselves resplendent and glisten with another light, so also spirit-bearing souls, illuminated by the Spirit, both become spiritual themselves and send forth grace to others. From this comes foreknowledge of future events, understanding of mysteries, comprehension of hidden things, distribution of gifts, heavenly citizenship, the choir with angels, endless gladness, abiding in God, likeness to God, the highest of all desirable things, to become God by grace." After some time the holy Daniel in Anaplus, having seen the great Symeon and his heart being filled with divine zeal, came to Anaplus and he also mounted a pillar, becoming a worker of many and very great miracles, and he continued on the pillar until the fourth year of the emperor Leo the Great, and so he departed to the Lord full of good works. In the 20th year Valentinian came from Rome to Constantinople, and he married as his wife the daughter of the emperor Theodosius, Eudoxia, who was born to him from Eudocia, and he returned again to Rome.
Cyrus, the prefect of the city, a most wise and capable man, after demolishing the land wall of Constantinople and adding two other sections, built another wall 1.599 in sixty days; wherefore the people, being astonished at the speed and the beauty of the wall's construction, cried out while the emperor was seated in the Hippodrome, "Constantine built it, Cyrus renewed it." For this reason he was envied and slandered as a pagan sympathizer, and after his property was confiscated and he was tonsured, he was ordained bishop in Smyrna. While Procopius was general against the Persians, it was declared to him by the Persian that "we should provide single combatants, and whichever is defeated, let his side pay tribute for a period of fifty years." Therefore, the general Procopius provided Areobindus, the count of the foederati, who, holding a lasso, lassoed the Persian and, pulling him down from his horse, killed him. And there was a pact of peace between the Romans and the Persians. And Areobindus, entering the city and being greatly received by the emperor, was promoted to consul. In the 28th year there was a collapse in the theater of Alexandria, and 502 men died. After Maximianus died, the most holy Proclus was appointed bishop of Constantinople, who in the 30th year of the reign of Theodosius brought back the relic of Chrysostom, and placed it in the church of the Holy Apostles. In his time great earthquakes occurred in Constantinople for four months, so that the people in Byzantium, being afraid, stayed outside the city in the so-called campus. Therefore, while the aforementioned patriarch with the clergy and the people was persevering there in the litanies, 1.600 at about the third hour, suddenly, as all were watching, a young man was snatched up into the air and he heard a divine voice commanding him to announce to the bishop and the people to process in this way, and to say "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us" and nothing
