you yourselves might say he has something reprehensible regarding his ordination. But it grieves us that he is affected by the doctrines of Marcellus and that he indiscriminately receives those who follow him into his own communion. For you know, most honored brothers, that the doctrine of Marcellus contains a rejection of all our hope, confessing neither the Son in His own hypostasis, but as having been put forth and again having returned to that from which He came forth, nor allowing that the Paraclete subsists in His own person, so that one would not err in declaring the heresy to be entirely alien to Christianity, but calling it a corrupted Judaism. We seek that you take care of these things. And this would be done, if you would deign to write to all the Churches throughout the East, that those who corrupt these things, if they should be corrected, are to be in communion; but if they should wish to contend stubbornly in their innovations, they are to be separated from them. And we ourselves are not unaware that we ought to have met with your wisdom and discussed these matters in common deliberation. But since the time does not permit, and postponement is harmful as the injury from them is taking root, we have of necessity sent the brothers, so that whatever has escaped the instruction of this letter, they may teach you from themselves and move your piety to provide the sought-after help to the Churches of God.
264. To Barses, Bishop of Edessa, while in exile
264.1 To the truly most God-beloved bishop Barses, worthy of all reverence and honor, Basil sends greetings in the Lord. As our most genuine brothers with Domninus are coming to your piety, we gladly took the opportunity for this letter and we greet you through it, praying to the holy God that you be preserved in this life until we are deemed worthy to see you and enjoy the gifts that are in you. Only pray, I beseech you, that the Lord may not give us over completely to the enemies of the cross of Christ, but may guard His Churches until the time of peace which He Himself, the righteous Judge, knows when He will grant. For He will grant it and will not utterly forsake us. But just as He appointed seventy years for the Israelites for their sins in the condemnation of captivity, so perhaps the Mighty One, having given us over for some appointed time, will someday call us back and restore us to our original peace, unless perhaps the apostasy is near, and the things now happening are the prelude to the coming of the Antichrist. But whatever the case may be, pray that He may either take away the afflictions or that the Good One may preserve us blameless through the afflictions. We greet through you the entire company that has been deemed worthy to be with your piety. All who are with us greet your piety. May you be kept well and of good cheer in the Lord, praying for me, for the Church of God by the grace of the Holy One.
265. To Eulogius, Alexander, Harpocration, bishops of Egypt, who were exiled
265.1 In all things we find great the dispensation of the good God concerning His Churches, so that even things that seem to be gloomy and not entirely according to our wish, these too are ordered for the benefit of the many in the inscrutable wisdom of God and in the unsearchable judgments of His justice. For behold, the Lord, having raised up your love from the regions of Egypt, has brought you into the midst of Palestine and established you, in imitation of
