That to each of men God has given suitably and for his benefit the gift through the Holy Spirit for working, not as he himself wills, but as he was predestined by Him, so that there might not be a vacant place in the midst of his church. (393)
What could the poet's creation ever know by itself? For of the knowledge which it received, an account would surely be required, and of action and operation, justly and fittingly. For a mattock, a sickle, a knife and a saw, an axe, a staff, a spear, a sword and a bow, an arrow and all the other tools in life, each possesses its own function, but not having received it from itself, but entirely from us. For the artisan skillfully makes each tool to operate for whatever purpose he might wish. Therefore it is not possible to reap cornfields with a mattock, nor to do carpentry with a sickle, nor to build with a knife, not to dig with a saw, not to sew with an axe, not to cut wood with a staff, and it is not right to saw with a spear, nor to sling with a sword, not to cut with the bow, but one must use each for its purpose appropriately. But if you use these things not for what they were made for, but otherwise, your life is ruined and every action entirely. Thus, therefore, understand that God has also made each faithful one to be active with works in this life, (394) appointing some to teach, others in every way to learn, others to rule the many, and others to submit to them; and to some he has given wisdom, to others knowledge and reason, to others to prophesy, to others to speak in tongues, to others to work miracles and to perform mighty deeds; others he has appointed as leaders. And these things are spiritual, but let us also speak of other gifts of the creator, which he has given to men, to each according to his worth: one he made brave in body, another more beautiful, and another more melodious than others,
