was troubling the city of the Alexandrians. For using sorcery by night he went around the cells of the monks, calling each by name, and to those who answered he said, "I am an angel, and I was sent to tell everyone to withdraw from the communion of Proterius and those in Chalcedon, and to elect Timothy Aelurus as bishop of Alexandria." And having purchased a mob of disorderly men, he tyrannically seized the throne of Alexandria; and though he was deposed, he was consecrated by two deposed men, and he performed consecrations of bishops, being unconsecrated himself, and performed baptisms, not being a presbyter, and with a certain insatiable rage he insulted the holy fourth synod. And on Holy Saturday, he slaughtered the blessed Proterius, who was giving way to the wrath, along with six others who were with him; and dragging his body through the whole city, they burned it with fire. In this year the relic of the holy martyr Anastasia was brought from Sirmium and was deposited in her church in the porticoes of Domninus. 1.609 In the 2nd year, the emperor Leo, having learned of the unjust death of Proterius and the lawless promotion of Aelurus, sent for those who had participated in the death of Proterius and had their tongues cut out. But he did not proceed against the unholy Timothy, leaving the judgment concerning him to the bishops. In the same year Zeno was also joined in marriage to Ariadne, the daughter of Leo. In the 3rd year the emperor sent letters to the bishops of each province, for each to write to him his own opinion, whether they were pleased with the decrees made in Chalcedon, and what they had to say about the ordination of Aelurus. In these he also appealed to the holy Symeon the Stylite and to other wonder-working and holy fathers, as if they were entrusting the judgment of the disputed matters to the God of all. And they by a unanimous vote unanimously ratify the holy synod in Chalcedon to be, and they accept the definition set forth by it, and they unanimously vote against Timothy as a murderer and a heretic; whom the emperor also exiled to Gangra. And there, having begun to hold assemblies, he is exiled to Cherson. Another Timothy, surnamed Leucus and Salophaciolus, being an orthodox and good man, beloved by all, is consecrated bishop of Alexandria. In the 4th year the great Symeon, the stylite of the enclosure, fell asleep, having been the first to show this kind of ascetic practice. In the 5th year a fire occurred in Constantinople, beginning 1.610 from the dockyard and reaching as far as the church of St. Thomas of the Amantians. But Marcian, the steward of the great church, having built the church of the Holy Anastasis, saved it from the fire while it was still new, having gone up to the tiled roof with a gospel book and a censer, and having propitiated God with tears. For this fire raged violently; for extending from the east from the dockyard to the church of St. John the Poor on the west, and on the south in the middle of the city from the Lausus to the Taurus, it destroyed everything. And the fire consumed conspicuous and distinguished buildings above others: in the Forum of Constantine, a very large house called the senate, adorned with bronze statues and porphyry stones, in which also the select officials deliberated and the emperor entered when he received the consular robe, and the nymphaeum of this house, lying opposite, in which the weddings of those who did not have houses took place; and in the Taurus a house, itself also suitable for the select officials and the emperor, for the former to meet and deliberate about matters to be done, and for the latter when presiding over the council in his consulship, on twelve variegated columns of Trojan stone, having a height of twenty-five feet, and they support the roof from both the south and north side along with the arches on each side to the east and west, of which the length was 240 feet and the width was 84; and two very large sacred houses, adorned with all kinds of stones, of which one happened to be not far from the tetrapylon, 1.611 and the other to the Taurus
