we need to learn of that time. For we hear that greater and more difficult sufferings have occurred in the intervening time around those places; which, if it is possible, and sooner, but if not, we might at least learn through the most devout brother Paul the fellow presbyter on his return, as we pray, that your life is kept unharmed and unmolested. But because we heard that all the roads were filled with bandits and deserters, we were afraid to put anything into the hands of our brother, lest we become the cause of his death as well. But if the Lord gives a moderate calm, as we hear of the passage of the army, we will hasten to send one of our own men, both to visit you and to report to us each of the things among you.
269. TO THE WIFE OF ARINTHAEUS, A LETTER OF CONSOLATION
269.1 It was indeed fitting and owed to your disposition for us to be present ourselves and to share in what has happened. For thus we would have both soothed our own grief and fulfilled what is appropriate in consolation for your reverence. But since my body no longer bears longer journeys, I have come to communication by letter, so that we might not seem to be altogether estranged from what has happened. Who then did not mourn for that man? Who has a heart so stony as not to shed a warm tear for him? And he filled me with exceptional sorrow, as I considered both the man’s personal honors toward me and his common protection of the Churches of God. But nevertheless we considered that, being a man and having served this life in the things required at the appropriate times, he was again taken up by God who orders our affairs. And we exhort your prudence, recalling these things, to bear what has happened calmly and, as far as possible, to endure the misfortune with moderation. Now, time is indeed sufficient to soften the heart and to give passage to reason; but nevertheless your excessive love for your husband and kindness toward all is suspect to us, lest you ever give yourself over to suffering, having received the deep wound of grief through the tenderness of your character. Therefore, the teaching of the Scriptures is always useful, but especially at such times. Remember, therefore, the decree of him who created us, by which we all, having sprung from the earth, again return to the earth, and no one is so great as to prove superior to dissolution. 269.2 That wonderful man was indeed noble and great, and the virtue of his soul was a match for the strength of his body, I too say, indeed having no excess in either, but still he was a man and died like Adam, like Abel, like Noah, like Abraham, like Moses, like whomever you might mention of those who share the same nature. Therefore, let us not be indignant because he was taken from us, but because we lived with him in the first place, let us have thanks for the one who joined us. For to be deprived of a husband is common for you with other women, but in such a marriage I do not think any other woman has equal cause to be proud. For He who fashioned us created that man as truly one model of human nature, so that all eyes were drawn to him, and every tongue recounted his deeds, and painters and sculptors fell short of his worth, and historians, in relating his brave deeds in wars, fall into the disbelief of myths. Wherefore the many did not bear to believe the rumor that carried about that grim news, nor to accept at all that Arinthaeus had died. But nevertheless he has suffered what will also happen to heaven and earth and the sun. He is gone, ending his life splendidly, not bent by old age, not yielding any of his eminence; great in the present life, and great in the one to come, having suffered no loss from his present brilliance with respect to the hoped-for glory because all

269.1 Τὸ μὲν ἀκόλουθον ἦν καὶ ὀφειλόμενόν σου τῇ διαθέσει αὐτοὺς ἡμᾶς
παρεῖναι καὶ συμμετέχειν τῶν γινομένων. Οὕτω γὰρ ἂν ἑαυτῶν τε τὴν λύπην κατεπραΰναμεν καὶ τῇ σῇ σεμνότητι τὸ τῆς παρακλήσεως εἰκὸς ἀπεπληρώσαμεν. Ἐπεὶ δὲ οὐκέτι μου φέρει τὸ σῶμα τὰς μακροτέρας κινήσεις, ἐπὶ τὴν διὰ τοῦ γράμματος ἦλθον ὁμιλίαν, ὡς ἂν μὴ παντά πασι δόξαιμεν ἀλλοτρίως ἔχειν πρὸς τὰ συμβάντα. Τίς μὲν οὖν τὸν ἄνδρα ἐκεῖνον οὐκ ἐστέναξε; Τίς δὲ οὕτω λίθινος τὴν καρδίαν ὡς μὴ θερμὸν ἐπ' αὐτῷ ἀφεῖναι δάκρυον; Ἐμὲ δὲ καὶ διαφερόντως κατηφείας ἐπλήρωσε τάς τε ἰδίας περὶ ἐμὲ τιμὰς τοῦ ἀνδρὸς λογιζόμενον καὶ τὴν κοινὴν τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ προστασίαν. Ἀλλ' ὅμως ἐλογισάμεθα ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ὢν καὶ λειτουργήσας τῷ βίῳ τούτῳ τὰ ἐπιβάλ λοντα τοῖς καθήκουσι χρόνοις πάλιν ὑπὸ τοῦ οἰκονομοῦντος τὰ ἡμέτερα Θεοῦ προσελήφθη. Ἃ καὶ τὴν σὴν φρόνησιν ἐνθυμουμένην πράως ἔχειν τὸ συμβὰν παρακαλοῦμεν καί, ὡς οἷόντε, μετρίως φέρειν τὴν συμφοράν. Ἱκανὸς μὲν οὖν καὶ ὁ χρόνος μαλάξαι τὴν καρδίαν καὶ τὴν πάροδον δοῦναι τοῖς λογισμοῖς· ἀλλ' ὅμως ὕποπτον ἡμῖν ἐστι τὸ ἄγαν σου φίλανδρον καὶ περὶ πάντας χρηστόν, μή ποτε ἔκδοτον δῷς σεαυτὴν τῷ πάθει δι' ἁπαλότητα ἠθῶν βαθεῖαν τὴν πληγὴν δεξαμένη τῆς λύπης. Πάντοτε μὲν οὖν χρήσιμον τὸ τῶν Γραφῶν διδασκάλιον, μάλιστα δὲ ἐπὶ τῶν τοιούτων καιρῶν. Μνήσθητι τοίνυν τῆς τοῦ κτίσαντος ἡμᾶς ἀποφάσεως δι' ἣν πάντες ἐκ τῆς γῆς φύντες πάλιν εἰς γῆν ὑποστρέφομεν, καὶ οὐδεὶς οὕτω μέγας ὥστε βελτίων φανῆναι τῆς διαλύσεως. 269.2 Καλὸς μὲν οὖν καὶ μέγας ὁ θαυμάσιος ἐκεῖνος καὶ ἐφάμιλλος τῇ ῥώμῃ τοῦ σώματος τὴν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀρετήν, φημὶ κἀγώ, οὐμενοῦν ἔχων ὑπερβολὴν εἰς ἑκάτερον, ἀλλ' ὅμως ἄνθρωπος καὶ τέθνηκεν ὡς Ἀδάμ, ὡς Ἄβελ, ὡς Νῶε, ὡς Ἀβραάμ, ὡς Μωσῆς, ὡς ὅν τινα ἂν εἴποις τῶν τῆς αὐτῆς φύσεως μετεχόντων. Μὴ οὖν, ἐπειδὴ ἀφῃρέθημεν αὐτόν, ἀγανακτῶμεν, ἀλλ', ὅτι τὴν ἀρχὴν συνῳκήσαμεν, χάριν ἔχωμεν τῷ συζεύξαντι. Τὸ μὲν γὰρ στερηθῆναι ἀνδρὸς κοινόν σοι πρὸς τὰς ἄλλας γυναῖκας, ἐπὶ δὲ τοιαύτῃ συνοι κήσει οὐκ οἶμαι ἄλλην γυναικῶν τὰ ἴσα ἔχειν σεμνύνεσθαι. Ἓν γὰρ τῷ ὄντι ὑπόδειγμα τῆς ἀνθρωπείας φύσεως τὸν ἄνδρα ἐκεῖνον ὁ δημιουργήσας ἡμᾶς ἔκτισεν, ὥστε πάντες μὲν ὀφθαλμοὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐφέροντο, πᾶσα δὲ γλῶσσα τὰ κατ' αὐτὸν διεξῄει, γραφεῖς δὲ καὶ πλάσται τῆς ἀξίας ἀπελιμ πάνοντο, ἱστορικοὶ δὲ ἄνδρες τὰ κατὰ τοὺς πολέμους ἀνδρα γαθήματα διηγούμενοι πρὸς τὴν τῶν μύθων ἐκπίπτουσιν ἀπιστίαν. Ὅθεν οὐδὲ πιστεύειν ἠνείχοντο οἱ πολλοὶ τῇ φήμῃ τὴν σκυθρωπὴν ἐκείνην ἀγγελίαν περιαγούσῃ οὐδὲ καταδέχεσθαι ὅλως ὅτι τέθνηκεν Ἀρινθαῖος. Ἀλλ' ὅμως πέπονθεν ἃ καὶ οὐρανῷ καὶ γῇ καὶ ἡλίῳ συμβήσεται. Οἴχεται καταλύσας λαμπρῶς μὴ ὑπὸ γήρως καμφθείς, μὴ καθυφείς τι τῆς περιφανείας· μέγας μὲν ἐν τῷ παρόντι βίῳ, μέγας δὲ ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι, μηδὲν ἐκ τῆς παρούσης λαμπρότητος πρὸς τὴν ἐλπιζομένην δόξαν ζημιωθεὶς διὰ τὸ πᾶσαν
