having held a synod of the apostles Peter and Paul, he sent two bishops and a defender to Constantinople, having written to Zeno and Acacius to expel Peter Mongus from Alexandria as a heretic. In the 13th year, when those from Rome were detained at Abydus by the will of Zeno and Acacius and their letters were taken away and they were thrown into prison, Zeno threatened to kill them, if they would not have communion with Acacius and Peter Mongus. In the 15th year, Zeno, by the counsel of Acacius, forced the bishops throughout the East to sign the Henotikon, which Acacius himself had composed from his own heart, and to have communion with Peter Mongus. And he persuaded the apocrisiaries of Rome with money to have communion with Acacius, contrary to what had been commanded them. When Felix learned this, he deposed them, and wrote a deposition to Acacius; when Acacius received this, he was insensible concerning it, and removed the name of Felix from the diptychs. In the 10th year, Peter Mongus died in Alexandria, 1.620 and Athanasius, surnamed Kelites, was ordained in his place. But the emperor Zeno, being relieved of the usurpers, expelled Calendion from the church of Antioch and exiled him to Oasis, and he established Peter the Fuller in it, who, having come to Antioch, did many evil things, again anathemas of the council and expulsions of blameless bishops and introductions and unlawful ordinations and things similar to these. But first he added to the Trisagion "Christ the King, who was crucified for us." But later coming he removed "Christ the King." And Xenaias, the servant of Satan, taught not to accept the icon of the Lord and of the saints. For he was a Persian by race, and a slave by fortune. But having fled from his own master in the time of Calendion he subverted the villages around Antioch from the faith. And though he was unbaptized, he said he was a cleric. Calendion drove him out, but Peter the Fuller ordained him bishop of Hierapolis and renamed him Philoxenus. But learning later that he was unbaptized, he said that the ordination was sufficient for him instead of baptism. But Euthymius the most orthodox drove Anastasius the silentiary, who later ruled badly, from the church as a heretic and of the same mind as Eutyches. In the 17th year, Zeno asked Marianus the most wise count; for he knew certain mystical things, which he also foretold to him. For he says, "Who will rule after me?" And he said that one from the silentiaries will succeed to both your kingdom and your wife, 1.621 "but you will kill me unjustly." And both came to pass in their own time. And in the same year Peter the Fuller also died, and in his place Palladius, a presbyter of the church of the holy protomartyr Thecla in Seleucia, was appointed bishop of Antioch. And with him were elected also John the son of Constantine and Anastasius the silentiary who ruled badly.
Zeno, however, being lifted up with arrogance, proceeds to confiscations and unjust murders, and accusing every man on any pretext whatsoever, he killed them. and to speak the truth, being overcome by melancholy and a demon, he killed pitiably and inhumanly Illus the magister, through whom he had practically saved his life and held his rule. And he kills also the wonderful and notable man in the composition of verses, Pelagius the patrician, who knew how to speak freely, as a prudent and just man and one who openly censured the lawless deeds of Zeno; who, when he was about to die unjustly, uttered such words to the God of all, stretching his hands to heaven, "O most just God, a violent death is brought upon me, because speaking freely I checked the many violent acts of Zeno, and because I did not permit his stupid brother to become emperor; but you, almighty Lord, who care for the things of justice, will soon demand from them an account for the blood-guilt." Εὐθύμιος δὲ ὁ ὀρθοδοξότατος Ἀναστά σιον τὸν σιλεντιάριον, τὸν κακῶς μετὰ ταῦτα βασιλεύσαντα, τῆς ἐκκλησίας ἐδίωκεν ὡς αἱρετικὸν καὶ ὁμόφρονα Εὐτυχοῦς. Ὁ μέντοι Ζήνων ἐπαρθεὶς ὑψηλοφροσύνῃ πρὸς δημεύσεις καὶ φόνους ἀδίκους χωρεῖ, καὶ πάντα ἄνθρωπον αἰτιώμενος διὰ τῆς οἱασοῦν αἰτίας ἀνῄρει. τὸ δ' ἀληθὲς εἰπεῖν, ὑπὸ μελαγχο λίας καὶ δαιμονίῳ κρατούμενος ἀνεῖλεν οἰκτρῶς καὶ ἀπανθρώπως Ἴλλον τὸν μάγιστρον, δι' οὗ καὶ τὴν ζωὴν σχεδὸν ἔσχε καὶ τῆς βασιλείας ἐκράτησεν. ἀναιρεῖ δὲ καὶ τὸν θαυμαστὸν καὶ περὶ ποίησιν ἐπῶν ἀξιόλογον ἄνδρα Πελάγιον τὸν πατρίκιον, ἐλευθε ροστομεῖν εἰδότα, ὡς φρόνιμον καὶ δίκαιον καὶ φανερῶς ἐλέγχοντα τὰς ἀθεμίτους Ζήνωνος πράξεις· ὃς ἐν τῷ μέλλειν ἀδίκως τελευ τᾶν τοιάσδε φωνὰς ἠφίει πρὸς τὸν τῶν ὅλων θεόν, εἰς οὐρανὸν τὰς χεῖρας ἀναπετάσας, "αἲ θεὲ δικαιότατε, ἐμοὶ μὲν ἐπάγεται βίαιος θάνατος, διότι τὰς πολλὰς βίας Ζήνωνος ἐλευθεροστομῶν ἀνέστελλον, καὶ ὅτι τὸν ἠλίθιον ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ οὐ συνεχώρουν βασιλέα γενέσθαι· σὺ δέ, δέσποτα παντοδύναμε, ᾧ μέλει τὰ τοῦ δικαίου, θᾶττον αὐτοῖς τῆς μιαιφονίας ἀπαιτήσεις τὰς εὐθύνας." τούτου φέρεται ἱστορία δι' ἐπῶν γεγραμμένη ἀπὸ Αὐγούστου 1.622
