Macedonius, when a man in a deadly feud drew a sword against him at the instigation of her enemies, was so far from bearing a grudge that he even ordered monthly rations to be given to him; for the man was meek. This he formerly also did in a case of sacrilege. When two certain bishops, an Orthodox and an Arian, were disputing about the faith, the Arian being a dialectician and the Orthodox pious and faithful, the Orthodox proposed that, setting aside arguments, they should enter a fire, and thus the more pious one would be revealed. When the Arian refused this, he himself entered, and standing in the midst of the fire he spoke to all, kept unharmed by God. In the 17th year, he fortified Daras, a large and strong place of Mesopotamia, situated between the borders of the Romans and the Persians. And he built a church and granaries and cisterns and porticoes and two public baths, naming it Anastasiopolis, and he gave it the rights of a city.
In the 20th year, Deuterius the bishop of the Arians, baptizing a certain man called Barbarus, dared to say, contrary to the Lord's tradition, "Barbarus is baptized in the name of the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit." And immediately the font dried up, and Barbarus, becoming fearful, fled and made the miracle known to all. In 1.631 these years the opposition of the heretics with Anastasius the emperor against Macedonius the orthodox bishop of Constantinople took place; by whom Macedonius is also exiled to Euchaita, and the sinner Timothy, called Litroboles and Kelon, is brought in. In the 22nd year, Anastasius the lawless emperor and Timothy the unholy bishop of Constantinople inflicted many evils upon those who were struggling for the wonderful Macedonius and the synod. And Anastasius, wishing to add to the Trisagion "who was crucified for us," persuaded by Severus the Acephalous, sent up the logothete and the prefect to the ambo to proclaim this. Wherefore a popular sedition arose, with them shouting for another emperor. And having set fire to many houses, and having insulted the emperor, they came to the monastery of Saint Philip, near the cistern of Saint Mocius, where a friend of the emperor was enclosed; and having killed him as one beloved by the emperor, they raised his head on a spear and cried out, "This is the friend of the enemy of the Holy Trinity." But also having slain an enclosed woman, in whom the emperor had great faith, they dragged them both and burned them in the monastery of Stoudios. At this the emperor, becoming afraid, ceased from the heresy for a short while. In the same year, when Alamundarus the phylarch of the Saracens was baptized by the Orthodox through the providence of God, the impious Severus sent two bishops to impart his own corruption 1.632 to the man. Whom he refuted wonderfully by the following device. For he said to them, "I have received letters today," he says, "that Michael the archangel has died." And when they said this was impossible, he said to them, "And how was a mere God crucified according to us and died, if Christ were not of two natures, if not even an angel dies?" And so with shame the bishops of Severus departed. And Cabades hamstrung some of the Christians in Persia, who afterwards walked. In the 23rd year, Vitalian, having taken all of Thrace and Scythia and Moesia, having with him a multitude of Huns and Bulgars, also took many cities and Cyril the general of Thrace, and came plundering as far as Byzantium.
But Anastasius, despairing, sends for peace, swearing with the senate that the exiles would be recalled and Macedonius and Flavian would receive back their own thrones, and a synod would be held in Heraclea, with the one from Rome also coming. And when all confirmed that these things would happen, Vitalian departed to his own lands
