In the 24th year, Vitalian, indignant with Anastasius on account of his perjury, inflicted many evils upon the armies of Anastasius and 1.633 the rest of the state, plundering and disarming them, and finally, as an insult, selling each soldier for a single follis. In the 25th year, the Huns called Sabirs, having crossed the Caspian Gates, overran Armenia, raiding Cappadocia and Galatia and Pontus, so as nearly to subdue Euchaita; wherefore the holy Macedonius also fled, being in great peril, and was saved in Gangra. When Anastasius learned this, he harshly ordered him to be guarded there, sending, as they say, even one to kill him. And having died in Gangra, he was laid to rest in the church of the holy martyr Callinicus, performing many healings. And as he was about to be placed in the tomb, raising his right hand he sealed himself with the cross, and so he was laid to rest. And to a certain Theodore, one of his companions, he said in a vision, "Receive this, and go, and read it to Anastasius, saying: I am departing to my fathers, whose faith I have kept, but I will not cease troubling my master, until you come and we enter into judgment." In this year very many Alexandrians, men and women and children, terribly afflicted by demons, suddenly began to bark. And in a dream someone saw a terrible figure saying that they were suffering on account of the anathemas of this synod. In the same year, the empress Ariadne died. And the vile Anastasius, having heard of a certain bishop of the so-called Oiniandoi that he debated cleverly and silenced all who held to his dogma, summoning him 1.634 said, "Be of my party, most admirable one, and 1.634 everything that you ask of us you will receive most quickly." But he said to him, "You rather be of the orthodox party, and do not, by following the opinion of the impious Severus and Eutyches and Dioscorus, inherit the eternal fire." And having said these things he seized the emperor's cloak, saying, "This garment will by no means go down with you into Hades, O emperor, but only piety toward God and the possession of virtues. Leave the church alone, which Christ redeemed with his own blood. You are ignorant and unreasonable. You understand none of the church's doctrines accurately, but rather you frighten the foolish with errors and buffooneries. Be content, being emperor, with your own rank, and do not punish the leaders of the churches." And he was shamed and remained speechless. But the wise bishop, being very poor, did not wish to receive even an obol from the emperor; so free was he and caring only for faith and piety toward God.
Between the Indians and Persians there is a fortress named Tzoudader, in which much money and pearls and precious stones were stored and were guarded by demons. But being persuaded that through the prayer of the Christians to God he could take possession of it, he besought a certain Christian bishop 1.635 from those in Persia concerning this, who, having performed a service and partaken of the divine mysteries, approached the place, drove out the demons there, and delivered the fortress to Kavadh without toil. At this Kavadh, being astonished, honored the bishop with the first seat, whereas until then the Manichaeans and Jews had held the first seats, and he granted permission to those who wished to be baptized. And a little before the death of Anastasius, a plot against him having been revealed, he arrested and destroyed many; among whom were also Justin and Justinian.
