life is very easy, if we silence the disturbances rising up against us from within, from our passions, and make our mind superior to the things that befall us from without. For neither losses nor illnesses nor the other difficulties of life will touch the serious man, as long as he has his mind traveling with God and looking to the future and lightly and steadily rising above the storm that arises from below. Since those who are violently seized by the cares of life, like over-fleshy birds having wings in vain, are dragged somewhere below with the cattle. But we were permitted to see you by circumstances for as long as those at sea who pass one another by. But still, since it is possible to know the whole lion even from its claw, from a brief experience we believe we have come to know you sufficiently. Wherefore we also consider it a great thing that you hold what concerns us in esteem and that it not be absent from your mind, but be continually with you through memory. And a sign of memory is writing; which the more frequently you do, the more you will gratify us.

294.τ TO FESTUS AND MAGNUS

294.1 It is fitting, I suppose, for fathers to have forethought for their own children, and for farmers to care for plants or seeds, and for teachers to be concerned for their pupils, especially when, because of their good nature, they show better hopes for themselves. For a farmer rejoices in his labor when the ears of corn ripen for him or the plants grow, and pupils delight teachers and children fathers, the one progressing toward virtue, the others toward growth. But we have a concern for you that is as much greater, and a hope that is as much better, as piety is superior to every art, and to all living things and fruits together, which we pray to see rooted by us and nourished in your still tender and pure souls, and having advanced to perfect prime and to seasonable fruits, with your love of learning assisting our prayers. For know well that both our goodwill toward you and the cooperation of God depend on your own minds, and when these are rightly directed toward what is needful, God will be present as a helper both when called and uncalled, and every man who loves God will be a volunteer for teaching. For the eagerness of those who are able to teach something useful is invincible, whenever the souls of the learners are pure from all resistance. Therefore, not even separation of body hinders, since He who created us, through an excess of wisdom and love for mankind, did not confine the mind to our bodies nor indeed the power of words to the tongue, but gave something more even from time to those who are able to be of service, so that they are able to transmit their teaching not only to those who are far distant, but also indeed to those born very late. And experience confirms this statement for us, since those who were born many years before teach the young, their teaching being preserved in writings, and we, though so separated in body, are always together in mind and converse easily, since our teaching is hindered neither by land nor by sea, if you have any care for your own souls.

295.τ TO MONKS

295.1 I think, indeed, that you, by the grace of God, need no other exhortation after the words which we ourselves addressed to you, urging you all to accept the common life in imitation of the apostolic way of life, which you also received as good teaching and for which you gave thanks through

Καὶ γὰρ οὔτε ζημίαι οὔτε ἀρρωστίαι οὔτε αἱ λοιπαὶ δυσχέρειαι τοῦ βίου ἅψονται τοῦ σπουδαίου, ἕως ἂν ἔχῃ τὴν διάνοιαν Θεῷ συμπορευομένην καὶ τὸ μέλλον ἀποσκοποῦσαν καὶ τῆς χαμόθεν ἐγειρομένης ζάλης κούφως καὶ εὐσταλῶς ὑπεραί ρουσαν. Ἐπεὶ οἵ γε σφοδρῶς ταῖς τοῦ βίου μερίμναις κατειλημμένοι, οἷον ὄρνιθες πολύσαρκοι εἰκῆ τὸ πτερὸν ἔχοντες, κάτω που σύρονται μετὰ τῶν βοσκημάτων. Σὲ δὲ τοσοῦτον μὲν ὑπὸ τῶν πραγμάτων ἰδεῖν ἐπετράπημεν ὅσον οἱ ἐν πελάγει ἀλλήλους παραμειβόμενοι. Πλὴν ἀλλ', ἐπειδὴ καὶ ἐξ ὄνυχος ἔστιν ὅλον γνωρίσαι τὸν λέοντα, ἐκ βραχείας τῆς πείρας ἡγούμεθά σε ἱκανῶς ἐγνωκέναι. Ὅθεν καὶ μέγα ποιούμεθα τὸ ἐν λόγῳ σε τὸ καθ' ἡμᾶς τίθεσθαι καὶ μὴ ἀπεῖναί σου τῆς διανοίας, ἀλλὰ διηνεκῶς σοι συνεῖναι διὰ τῆς μνήμης. ∆εῖγμα δὲ μνήμης τὸ γράφειν· ὅπερ ὅσῳ ἂν συνεχέστερον ποιῇς, τοσούτῳ πλέον ἡμῖν χαριεῖ.

294.τ ΦΗΣΤΩ ΚΑΙ ΜΑΓΝΩ

294.1 Πρέπει μέν που καὶ πατράσι παίδων ἰδίων πρόνοια καὶ γεωργοῖς φυτῶν

ἢ σπερμάτων ἐπιμέλεια καὶ διδασκάλοις μαθητῶν φροντίς, μάλιστα ὅταν δι' εὐφυΐαν βελτίους ἐφ' ἑαυτοῖς ὑποφαίνουσι τὰς ἐλπίδας. Χαίρει γὰρ πόνῳ καὶ γεωργὸς ἁδρυνομένων αὐτῷ τῶν ἀσταχύων ἢ τῶν φυτῶν αὐξανομένων, εὐφραίνουσι δὲ καὶ μαθηταὶ διδασκάλους καὶ παῖδες πατέρας, οἱ μὲν πρὸς ἀρετήν, οἱ δὲ πρὸς αὔξησιν ἐπιδιδόντες. Ἡμεῖς δὲ τοσοῦτον μείζονα μὲν ἐφ' ὑμῖν ἔχομεν τὴν φροντίδα, κρείττονα δὲ τὴν ἐλπίδα, ὅσον εὐσέ βεια πάσης μὲν τέχνης, πάντων δὲ ζώων ὁμοῦ καὶ καρπῶν ἐστιν ἀμείνων, ἣν ἐν ἁπαλαῖς ἔτι καὶ καθαραῖς ταῖς ὑμετέ ραις ψυχαῖς ῥιζωθεῖσαν ὑφ' ἡμῶν καὶ τραφεῖσαν ἰδεῖν εὐχόμεθα καὶ προελθοῦσαν εἰς ἀκμὴν τελείαν καὶ εἰς καρ ποὺς ὡραίους, συλλαμβανομένης ἡμῶν ταῖς εὐχαῖς τῆς ὑμετέρας φιλομαθίας. Εὖ γὰρ ἴστε καὶ τὴν ἡμετέραν εἰς ὑμᾶς εὔνοιαν καὶ τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ συνεργίαν ταῖς ὑμετέραις ἐναποκεῖσθαι γνώμαις, ὧν πρὸς τὸ δέον εὐθυνομένων, Θεός τε συνεργὸς καλούμενος παρέσται καὶ ἄκλητος καὶ πᾶς φιλόθεος ἄνθρωπος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν αὐτεπάγγελτος. Ἀνί κητος γὰρ ἡ προθυμία τῶν διδάσκειν τι χρήσιμον δυναμένων, ὅταν αἱ τῶν μανθανόντων ψυχαὶ πάσης καθαρεύωσιν ἀντι τυπίας. Οὐκοῦν οὐδὲ σώματος κωλύει χωρισμός, τοῦ δημιουργήσαντος ἡμᾶς δι' ὑπερβολὴν σοφίας καὶ φιλανθρω πίας μὴ συμπεριορίσαντος τοῖς σώμασι τὴν διάνοιαν μήτε μὴν τῇ γλώττῃ τῶν λόγων τὴν δύναμιν, δόντος δέ τι πλεῖον καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ χρόνου τοῖς ὠφελεῖν δυναμένοις, ὡς μὴ μόνον τοῖς μακρὰν διεστηκόσιν, ἀλλὰ δὴ καὶ τοῖς λίαν ὀψιγόνοις παραπέμπειν δύνασθαι τὴν διδασκαλίαν. Καὶ τοῦτον ἡμῖν ἡ πεῖρα πιστοῦται τὸν λόγον, ἐπείπερ οἵ τε πολλοῖς πρότερον ἔτεσι γενόμενοι διδάσκουσι τοὺς νέους σωζομένης ἐν γράμ μασι τῆς διδασκαλίας, ἡμεῖς τε κεχωρισμένοι τοσοῦτον τοῖς σώμασι τῇ διανοίᾳ σύνεσμεν ἀεὶ καὶ προσομιλοῦμεν ῥᾳδίως τῆς διδασκαλίας οὔτε ὑπὸ γῆς οὔτε ὑπὸ θαλάσσης κωλυο μένης, εἴ τις ἔστιν ὑμῖν τῶν ἰδίων ψυχῶν φροντίς.

295.τ ΜΟΝΑΖΟΥΣΙ

295.1 Ἡγοῦμαι μὲν μηδεμιᾶς ἑτέρας ὑμᾶς τῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριτι παρακλήσεως

δεῖσθαι μετὰ τοὺς λόγους οὓς δι' ἡμῶν αὐτῶν ἐποιησάμεθα πρὸς ὑμᾶς παρακαλοῦντες ὑμᾶς πάντας τὴν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ζωὴν καταδέξασθαι εἰς μίμημα τῆς ἀποστολι κῆς πολιτείας, ὃ καὶ ἐδέξασθε ὡς ἀγαθὸν δίδαγμα καὶ ηὐχαριστήσατε δι'
