it to the Lord. Since, therefore, what was spoken by us were not mere words, but teachings that ought to come forth into action for the benefit of you who endure them, for our own rest who proposed the opinion, and for the glory and praise of Christ whose name is called upon us, for this reason I have sent our most beloved brother, so that he might know your eagerness and stir up the sluggish and make clear to us what is resistant. For great is the desire both to see you gathered together and to hear concerning you that you do not love an unwitnessed life, but rather that you all accept to be both guardians of one another's exactness and witnesses of their right actions. For in this way each will receive both his own perfect reward and that for his brother's progress, which it is fitting for us to provide for one another in word and deed through continuous fellowship and exhortation. And above all we exhort you to remember the faith of the Fathers and not be shaken by those who attempt to mislead you in our quietness, knowing that neither is exactness of life in itself, unless it is enlightened by faith in God, beneficial, nor can right confession, being void of good works, present us to the Lord, but both must be joined together, so that the man of God may be complete and our life may not limp on account of what is lacking. For it is faith that saves us, as the Apostle says, “working through love.”
296. To Eleuthera
296.1 Considering your disposition toward us and what zeal you have for the work
of the Lord, knowing your zeal, we took courage as of a daughter formerly and used the mules for a longer time, using them sparingly indeed as if they were our own, but nevertheless we prolonged their service. These things, therefore, had to be written to your grace, so that you might know that what is being done is proof of your disposition. And at the same time we also remind your decorum through this letter to be mindful of the Lord and, always keeping the departure from this world before your eyes, to order your life for your defense before the unerring Judge, so that you may have boldness for your good works before him who is about to reveal the secrets of our hearts on the day of his visitation. We greet your most noble daughter through you, and I ask that she pass her time in the study of the oracles of the Lord, so that her soul may be nourished by good teaching and her mind may grow in increase and stature more than her body does by nature.
297. To Eleuthera
297.1 Judging it to be very much incumbent upon me, both because of my advanced age
and because of the genuineness of my spiritual disposition, to visit your incomparable nobility in my bodily presence and not to neglect you when absent, but to fulfill what is lacking by letters, since I found this woman a suitable servant for letters to your grace, through her I address you, primarily exhorting you to the work of the Lord, so that the holy God, having honorably brought you through the days of your sojourning in all godliness and gravity, might make you worthy also of the good things to come. Then I also commend the aforementioned daughter to you, that you might so receive her as my daughter and your own sister, and that concerning whatever she might communicate to your decorous and pure soul, you may feel for her and take her part, as from the
