having your reward first from the Lord, then also giving rest to us who in the bowels of Christ are fulfilling the measure of love for you.
298. WITHOUT SUPERSCRIPTION, TO A PIOUS MAN
298.1 That you deign to use us as counselors and partners in your cares concerning all things, you do what is fitting for your perfection, and God will reward you both for your love towards us and for your diligence in your life. But I was amazed that the deceit of this man has touched you, if you have believed that some irrational power is present in water, and this when no testimony confirms the report. For there is no one from there who has received for his body, small or great, the good which he hoped for, unless for someone some comfort has come by chance, such as naturally occurs to those who are sleeping or are engaged in other activities in life. But he who destroys love persuades the more simple to attribute spontaneous events to the nature of the water. And that our word is true, you may be taught by experience itself.
299. TO A CENSOR
299.1 You wrote to me as one who knows that you are ill-disposed toward the care of public affairs. For it is an old saying that those who lay claim to virtue do not with pleasure apply themselves to offices. For what is peculiar to physicians, this I see is also true of rulers. For they see terrible things and experience unpleasantness and reap their own sorrows from the misfortunes of others, those at least who are truly rulers, since the mercenary sort of men who look to money and are excited about this glory consider it the greatest of goods to receive some power from which they will be able to benefit friends, defend against enemies, and acquire for themselves the things they pursue. But you are not such a person. How could you be? You who willingly withdrew when the political power was so great and when it was possible for you to rule a city as a single household; but you chose the quiet life, free from business, considering it of greater worth neither to have troubles nor to cause them for others, than the honor others get from being troublesome. But since the Lord has willed that the land of the Iberians should not be under hucksters nor that the assessment be as in a slave market, but, as is just, that each man be registered, accept the task, though it be otherwise troublesome, yet as being able to become for you a cause of approval with God. And neither shrink from power nor despise poverty, but provide for those under your administration the impartiality of your judgments, more impartial than any scale. For thus your zeal for justice will become manifest also to those who have entrusted you, and they will admire you above others. Or even if it should escape their notice, it will not escape our God, who has set before us great prizes for good works.
300. CONSOLATORY, TO THE FATHER OF SCHOLASTICUS
300.1 Since the Lord has placed us in the second rank of fathers to the Christians, entrusting to us the formation through piety of the children who have believed in him, we considered the suffering that befell your blessed son as our own as well, and we lamented the untimeliness of his departure, sympathizing especially with you and considering how great will be the weight of pain for a father by nature, when for us, who are related by the commandment, so great is the heart's...
