a sadness was engendered. For in his case there was no need either to suffer or to say anything sorrowful, but pitiable are those who were disappointed in their hopes for him. And indeed it is worthy of many tears and groans, having sent away a child in the very flower of his age for the study of Letters, to receive him back silent with this long and dreadful silence. But these things immediately moved us as human beings, and we shed a ready tear and let forth an unbidden groan from the depths of our heart, as our passion suddenly enveloped our reason like some cloud. But when we came to ourselves and looked with the eye of the soul to the nature of human affairs, we apologized to the Lord for the way our soul was disposed toward the event in its being carried away, and we admonished ourselves to bear moderately these things allotted to the life of men by the ancient decree of God. A boy is gone, just at the age for living, distinguished among the bands of his peers, longed for by his teachers, able from a mere meeting to draw even the most savage to goodwill, quick in his studies, gentle in character, composed beyond his years, and saying more than these things one would say less than the truth, but nevertheless a human born from a human. What then should the father of such a one think? What else but to remember his own father, that he is dead? What wonder then is it that one born of a mortal should become the father of a mortal? But that it was before his time and before he was sated with life and before he reached the measure of age and appeared to men and left a succession of his line, these things are not an increase of the grief, as I persuade myself, but a consolation for what has happened. The ordinance of God ought to be given thanks, because he did not leave orphan children on earth, because he did not leave a widowed wife given over to long grief or to live with another man and neglect her former marriage. But as to the fact that the boy's life was not prolonged in this life, who is so senseless as not to consider this the greatest of goods? For a longer stay here is an occasion for more evils. He did no evil, he did not devise deceit against his neighbor, he did not come under the necessity of mixing with factions of evil-doers, he was not involved in the evils of the marketplace, he did not endure the necessity of sins, not falsehood, not ingratitude, not greed, not love of pleasure, nor the passions of the flesh, as many as are wont to arise in untutored souls; he departed with his soul stained by none of these blemishes, but pure he withdrew to the better lot. The earth did not hide the beloved, but heaven received him. God, who orders our affairs, who legislates the set times for each, who brought him into this life, He Himself also transferred him. We have as a school in the excesses of misfortunes that famous voice of the great Job: "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; as it seemed good to the Lord, so also it has come to pass. Blessed be the name of the Lord for ever."

301.1 How we were affected at the hearing of the misfortune, no account would suffice for us to represent its vividness, at one time considering the loss which the community of the devout suffered, having lost the patroness of its own order, at another time thinking into what gloom the cheerfulness of your reverence has fallen, seeing with our mind a house blessed by all brought to its knees and a life together joined by the highest harmony dissolved more quickly than a dream. How could we not, even if we were of adamant, be bent in our souls? But for us, even from our first conversation a certain familiarity arose with your august reverence, and so much by your virtue

παράστασιν τῆς ἐναργίας ἀρκέσειε, νῦν μὲν τὴν ζημίαν λογιζομένοις ἣν τὸ κοινὸν τῶν εὐλαβῶν ἐζη μιώθη τὴν προστάτιν τοῦ καθ' ἑαυτὴν τάγματος ἀπολέσαν, νῦν δὲ τὴν φαιδρότητα τῆς σῆς σεμνότητος εἰς οἵαν μετέ πεσε κατήφειαν ἐννοοῦντες, οἶκον τοῖς πᾶσι μακαριστὸν εἰς γόνυ κλιθέντα καὶ συμβίωσιν διὰ τῆς ἄκρας ἁρμονίας συμ πεφυκυῖαν ὀνείρου θᾶττον διαλυθεῖσαν βλέποντες τῇ δια νοίᾳ.
