Therefore, the Holy Spirit later compels John, who was declining to preach the gospel out of piety and humility, in his old age, after ninety years of his life, after his return from Patmos which occurred under Claudius Caesar, and after 2.264 he had spent a considerable number of years in Asia, he is compelled to set forth the gospel. And he had no need to speak in detail about the incarnate advent; for it had already been securely established. But as if walking behind some and seeing them ahead, having given themselves over to very rough, erroneous, and thorny paths, he intended to call them back to a straight road and, making them secure, to proclaim to them and to say: Why do you wander? Where are you turning? Where are you wandering, Cerinthus and Ebion and the others? It is not as you think. Yes, Christ was born according to the flesh, clearly; for behold, I myself confess that the Word became flesh. But do not think that he exists only from when he became flesh; for he is not only from the time of Mary, as each of us exists from when he is born, but before being born does not exist. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made” and what follows. “and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw him.” Then “there was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all might believe through him. He was not that Light, but was to bear witness of the Light. The true Light was, which enlightens every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God; who were born not of blood and of flesh, but of God. And the Word, he says, became flesh, and dwelt among us. John bears witness and cries out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke to you”; and that “from his fullness we have all received.” And he says “I am not the Christ, but the voice of one crying in the wilderness.” 13. And when he had related all these things, he says “these things took place in Bethabara”; but in other copies “in Bethany beyond the Jordan.” And after these things he shows that the disciples of John said to him: “Rabbi, where are you staying? He said: Come and see. And they went, and stayed with him that day.” And the next day, “it was about the tenth hour, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who had followed him; he first finds his own brother Simon and says to him, We have found the Messiah, 2.266 which is interpreted Christ.
