was being torn from the body. But while the painful things are such and greater than these, what is the consolation for what has happened? First, the law of our God which has held sway from the beginning, that one who has come into being must by all means depart from life at the appointed time. If, therefore, human affairs have been so ordained from Adam until our time, let us not be distressed at the common laws of nature, but let us accept God's dispensation for us, who commanded that noble and invincible soul to depart from life not when the body was consumed by disease nor withered by time, but in the prime of life and in the splendor of his military achievements to end his life. So we ought not to grieve because we have been separated from such a man, but let us thank the Lord that we were deemed worthy of living with such a man, whose loss almost the entire Roman Empire has felt, whom even the Emperor recalled and soldiers mourned and those in the highest offices lamented as a true son. Since, therefore, he has left you the memory of his own virtue, consider that you have sufficient consolation for your suffering. Then I also want you to know this, that he who has not yielded to tribulations, but through hope in God has borne the weight of sorrow, has a great reward from God for his endurance. For we have not been permitted by the Apostle's legislation to grieve for those who have fallen asleep in the same way as outsiders. Let your children also be like living images, consoling you for the absence of the one you long for. So let your occupation with child-rearing lead your soul away from sorrowful things, and by being concerned with how you might spend the rest of your time pleasingly to the Lord, you will devise a good occupation for your thoughts. For the preparation of our defense before our Lord Jesus Christ and the earnest desire to be found numbered among those who love him is sufficient to overshadow sorrow, so that we may not be swallowed up by it. And may the Lord grant your heart the good consolation from his Spirit, so that we, hearing about you, may be relieved, and you may be a good example of a virtuous life to all your peers.

303.1 The people of this place, by means of false accusation, I think, have persuaded your Honour to impose upon these people a tax of mares. Since, therefore, what is happening is both unjust and for this reason ought to be displeasing to your Honour, and is also grievous to us because of our existing kinship with those who are wronged, we have hastened to ask your Goodness not to allow the insolence of those who are attempting to do wrong to proceed.

Ἡ γὰρ ἑτοιμασία τῆς ἐπὶ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἀπολογίας καὶ ἡ σπουδὴ τοῦ εὑρεθῆναι ἡμᾶς ἐναριθμίους τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτὸν ἱκανή ἐστιν ἐπισκο τῆσαι τῇ λύπῃ ὥστε μὴ καταποθῆναι ἡμᾶς ὑπ' αὐτῆς. σου φοράδων τέλεσμα τοῖσδε ἐπαγαγεῖν. Ἐπεὶ οὖν καὶ τὸ γινόμενον ἄδικον καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἀπαρέσκειν ὀφεῖλον τῇ τιμιότητί σου καὶ ἡμῖν λυπηρὸν διὰ τὴν πρὸς τοὺς ἠδικημένους ἡμῖν ὑπάρχουσαν οἰκειότητα, ἐσπεύσαμεν παρακαλέσαι τὴν χρηστότητά σου μὴ ἐᾶσαι προβῆναι τοῖς ἀδικεῖν ἐπιχειροῦσι τὴν ἐπήρειαν.
