to be deemed worthy of adoption, and in the likeness of a royal image Christ is to be worshipped in the person of God the Word, and after the resurrection to have become immutable in his thoughts and sinless. And in addition to these things, he said that the union of God the Word with Christ was of such a kind as the apostle spoke of concerning a man and a woman: the two shall be one flesh. Furthermore, I urge you to examine also the things badly written by Theodoret and Ibas against the first holy council in Ephesus, and to pronounce similarly against him." And having investigated these things again in like manner, the divine fathers answered, "The divine council in Chalcedon, having cried out many things against Theodoret and Ibas, did not receive them otherwise, unless they first anathematized their own wicked writings and Theodore and Nestorius. But we condemn and anathematize, in addition to all other heretics who were condemned and anathematized by the said four holy councils, Theodore who became bishop of Mopsuestia and his impious writings, and indeed also the things badly written by Theodoret against both the orthodox faith and the twelve chapters of Cyril of holy memory and the first holy council in Ephesus, and whatever was written by him in defense of Theodore and Nestorius. In addition to these, we also anathematize the impious letter 1.671 said to have been written by Ibas to Maris the Persian, which denies that God the Word, having been incarnate of the holy virgin Mary the Theotokos, became man, and which slanders the divine Cyril as a heretic, and blames the first holy council in Ephesus for deposing Nestorius without a trial and investigation, and which rejects the twelve chapters of the blessed Cyril, while vindicating Nestorius and Theodore and their God-hated writings and doctrines. Wherefore, then, counting the unbridled tongues of these heretics and all, and their most impious writings, and the heretics themselves who persisted to the end in their own evil opinion and wickedness, along with the father of lies, the devil, we shall say, "Go into the light of your fire and into the flame which you have kindled." In these years a certain rich man in Constantinople, having fallen ill and fearing death, gave thirty pounds of gold to the poor. And having unexpectedly recovered his health, and repenting through diabolical deception, he confides this to his genuine and rich friend. And he says to him, "By no means, O man, accept this wicked thought, lest you grieve God who had mercy on you and raised you up on account of your charity, and he bring upon you a sudden death, and you depart unrepentant." But when he was not persuaded but rather became more despondent, the friend said to him, "Since you do not accept my counsel for salvation, let me tell you 1.672 another plan." And he says, "What is that?" And the truly merciful one answered, "Come to the church, and say, 'It is not I, Lord, who gave that charity, but this man is,' and I will provide you with the thirty pounds immediately." And that wretched man, agreeing to this and having gone to the church, taking the gold in his hands and having said the word, as he was going out he fell beside the gate of the church and died. And when the clergy and all who were present were astonished, they urged the master of the coins to take them. But he was not persuaded, but distributed them to the poor, saying, "God is not mocked." For a promise to God extends not only to money but also to word and intention. It is necessary, therefore, for all to render what has been promised to God: the virgin her virginity, the continent his continence, those in marriage their chastity and mutual honor and love, and finally all the to
