In the same year the Huns, who are also Slavs, rose up against Thrace, and took many captive and killed them, and they captured both the stratelates and the strategos. And finding certain places of the Anastasian Wall had fallen from the earthquakes, they entered and took captives as far as Dripeia and Nymphae and 1.678 the village of Chiton. When the emperor learned this, he conscripted many, and sent them to the long wall. And joining battle, many of the Romans died. And the emperor sent Belisarius against them, who, having taken the horses of the citizens and equipped an army, came to the village of Chiton, and having made a camp, killed as many of them as he captured. And he ordered trees to be cut and dragged behind his army, and from the wind a great cloud of dust was raised, and he brought it upon the Huns. And they, thinking there were great multitudes, fled as far as Arcadiopolis. The emperor therefore ordered double-sterned boats to be made and to go to the Danube and make war on them. When the barbarians learned this, they begged through an ambassador to be granted a safe crossing of the river. And the emperor sent Justin his nephew, the curopalates, to get them across. In the 33rd year he builds the bridge of the Sangarius river, the so-called five-arched bridge, with five vaults, which was previously wooden. And he also builds the church of the most holy Theotokos at the Spring. In the 34th year it was rumored in the city that the emperor had died, because he had a headache and saw no one. And there was turmoil and plundering in the porticoes and the bakeries. And around the ninth hour he gave an order to the prefect, and he lit lights throughout the whole city, that the emperor was well, and the turmoil was suppressed. In the month of December a great fire occurred from the Sophiae and 1.679 as far as the house of Probus. There was also a great plague in Cilicia and Anazarbus and Antioch the Great, and earthquakes. And the Orthodox and the Severians clashed against each other, and many murders occurred. And the emperor sent out and punished the disorderly. In the 35th year a fire occurred late in the evening in the Caesarium as far as the Omphacera, and all the workshops and the gates of the ox were burned. And while the Hippodrome races were being held, a popular riot occurred, and the Greens attacked the Blues, and committed many murders; whom the emperor arrested and punished with many tortures. In the 30th year there was again a popular revolt concerning the tickets, and the emperor punished many of them. And there was a drought and a shortage of water. Then news of victory came from Rome, that Narses the patrician had taken two strong cities of the Goths, Viria and Vringas. And when a plot was being planned, Belisarius too was falsely accused by those who were arrested, and it was ordered that he should remain in his house without going out. And on the 19th of July, having been shown to be innocent, he again received back what had been taken from him. In the 37th year a fire occurred, and the hospice of Sampson was completely burned and the houses in front of the house of Rufus and the middle court of the great church called the Garsonostasion, and the two monasteries near Hagia Eirene, and part of its narthex.

In the 38th year Belisarius the patrician died in Byzantium. In this year Eutychius, patriarch of Constantinople, was deposed and exiled to Amaseia by Justinian, and in his place came John, from the scholastici. And at the end of his life Justinian, having stirred up the dogma concerning the corruptible and incorruptible, and having sent an edict everywhere, died estranged from the piety of God, having reigned 38 years, 7 months, and 13 days. And his successor becomes his nephew Justin the curopalates. And the Augusta Theodora had died before. Justin the Orthodox, the Thracian, reigned 13 years. He was of good age in appearance, broad, well-built, with greyish-blue eyes, somewhat blond, with a thin beard, cowardly, quick-tempered, but after a little while magnanimous,
