doing them such a favor as those who lead the thirsty to springs. The one now approaching will shortly be esteemed for his own sake, whenever he comes into your company. But now he is known from his father, who has gained a great name among us for his uprightness of life and his political influence, and who is joined to me in the closest friendship. In return for which, I give this favor to his son by making him known to you, a thing worthy of the greatest prayer for those who know how to judge a man's virtue.
336.τ LIBANIUS TO BASIL
336.1 After a long time a young Cappadocian has come to us. This is one advantage, that he is a Cappadocian. But this Cappadocian is also of the first rank. This is a second advantage. But also he brings us a letter from the admirable Basil. What could one say is greater than this? For I, whom you think have forgotten you, respected you long ago when you were a youth, seeing you rival elders in self-control (and this in that city teeming with pleasures) and already possessing a great share of eloquence. And when you thought it necessary to see Athens and were persuading Celsus, I rejoiced with Celsus who was devoted to your soul. But when you returned and held your native land, I said to myself: "What is Basil now doing for us and to what kind of life has he set out? Does he engage in the law-courts, emulating the ancient orators, or does he make orators of the sons of wealthy fathers?" But when some came reporting that you were traveling a much better path than these, and were considering how you might become a friend to God rather than collect gold, I blessed both you and the Cappadocians; you for wishing to be such a man, and them for being able to produce such a citizen. 336.2 And that Firmus, I know well that he has continued to excel everywhere; for from this comes the power of his words. And having enjoyed many praises, I do not know that I have ever heard of such great ones for men of his age as I now have in your letters. For that you, the one saying it, should be unable for anyone to surpass his glory, how great a thing must one consider that for him? But you seem to me to have sent these men before seeing Firminus. For otherwise, would not the letters have contained mention of him? And now what is Firminus doing or what does he intend to do? Is he still at the wedding feasts, or have those things long since ceased, but the council is burdensome and there is every necessity to remain, or what hopes are there that he will again be a partaker of Rhetoric? Let him answer something to us, and may it be something good. But if it should also be something grievous, it will at least relieve us from looking toward the gates. But if Firminus happened to be in Athens now, what would the councilors among you be doing? Or would they send the Salaminia after him? You see that I am insulted by your citizens alone. Nevertheless, I will not cease from loving and praising the Cappadocians. But I pray that they may become better toward me, but if they remain the same, I shall bear it. Firminus was with us for four months, and was not idle for a single day. And how much has been gathered you yourself will know, and perhaps you will not find fault. But in order that he might be able to come here again, what ally must we call upon? For if the councilors are wise (as would be fitting for educated men), they will honor him on the second occasion, since they grieved him on the first.
