having returned from the temptation to the Jordan and having passed through the sea of Tiberias, while going towards Nazareth he clearly went up to Jerusalem and in the middle of the feast cried out, saying “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink,” and thus he went away to Nazareth and to Judea and to Samaria and to the regions of Tyre. And when the first year was completed, again he goes up to Jerusalem and then they sought to seize him during the feast and they were afraid; during which feast he said that “I am not going up to this feast.” For he was not lying, may it not be. 2.295 “For when the feast was half over, he came,” it says, “and went up to Jerusalem,” “and they were saying: Is this not he whom they were seeking to seize? And behold, he speaks openly; can it be that the priests have learned that this is the Christ? But we know where this man is from.” For as he was speaking mysteriously and spiritually to his brothers, they did not know what he was saying. For he was telling them not to ascend into heaven at that feast nor to the cross, to fulfill for the time being the economy of his passion and the mystery of salvation and to rise from the dead and to ascend into heaven; all of which things he was fulfilling by his own authority. And after these things, when the two-year period was completed after the baptism and his birth from the month of November and from the month of January and those beyond, then in the thirty-third year of his sojourn in the flesh, after he passed the two consulships, which we have mentioned, of the two Gemini and that of Rufus and Rubellius, then in the third consulship, in its third month, after January and February in the month of March the impassible God the Word perfects the mystery of the passion, suffering in the flesh for our sake, but remaining in impassibility, as Peter says “put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” 26. And he suffers on the thirteenth day before the Kalends of April * they having transgressed one * evening, that is, in the middle of the night of the fourteenth of the moon. For they anticipated and ate the 2.296 Passover, as the gospel says and we have often said; therefore they ate the Passover two days before * eating it, that is on Tuesday 2.297 evening when it ought to have been on Thursday evening; for the fourteenth was thus on Thursday. And he is seized late on that same Tuesday, which was the eleventh of the moon, by night, the sixteenth before the Kalends of April, Wednesday dawning the twelfth, by night, the fifteenth before the Kalends of April, Thursday the thirteenth, by day, and the fourteenth by night, the fourteenth before the Kalends of April, the day of Preparation the fourteenth, by day, the thirteenth before the Kalends of April, Saturday the fifteenth, by day, the twelfth before the Kalends of April, Sunday dawning the fifteenth, by night; which was the illumination of Hades and of earth and of heaven and the equality of night and day, on account of the fifteenth of the moon and the course of the sun; because both the resurrection and the equinox occurred on the eleventh before the Kalends of April, concerning which the Jews, being mistaken, made an intercalation of one day, as I said before. And the calculation of the minute detail * has certain hours, which falls every three years, being disputed among them by one day; for they add to the lunar course after the three hundred fifty-four days another four hours per year, so that in three years it becomes one day. Therefore among them five months are completed as intercalary in fourteen years, on account of the subtraction of the * one hour from the solar course of three hundred sixty-five days and three hours; for when the † hours are added, then there are 365 days * minus one hour; whence these people, multiplying the 14 years six times 2.298 by means of † the 84th year, in the eighty-fifth they place one intercalary month, so that there are thirty-one
