and from my soul I seek you. Reveal, as you have said, and show yourself to me. For I know that you are true, I have come to know that you are not false and that you love those who love you and you converse as with friends, not in shadow nor in appearance, nor as mind to another mind, but as the Word who is from the beginning, hypostatic life, begotten from the Father and united with him and conversing inexpressibly. Thus with those whom you yourself beget by your Holy Spirit and show to be your sons, or rather your brothers and sons of God, your Father, with these you both converse and, seeing them, are seen by them in turn. Show, therefore, your compassion, show your love for mankind and your mercy, Savior, (384) Of which creatures, then? Of the material and immaterial; for material are the things which you see, and immaterial are the angels. Between these, then, I say to you, is the living being, man, and he is twofold: among sensible things he is immaterial, and among immaterial things he is sensible. This one, therefore, as a sensible being, I made lord and master of things seen, having subjected all visible things as slaves to him alone, so that he might see my works and glorify me, the creator; and as being rational and perceiving intellectually,

Οἶδα γάρ ἀληθινόν σε, ἔγνωκα ὡς ἀφευδής εἶ καί φιλεῖς τούς σέ φιλοῦντας καί προσομιλεῖς ὡς φίλοις οὐ σκιᾷ οὐδέ ἐμφάσει, οὐδ᾿ ὡς νοῦς νοΐ ἑτέρῳ, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς λόγος ὤν ἀρχῆθεν, ἐνυπόστατος ζωή τε, ἐκ πατρός γεγεννημένος καί αὐτῷ συνηνωμένος καί συνόμιλος ἀφράστως. Οὕτως οὕς αὐτός γεννήσεις Πνεύματί σου τῷ Ἁγίῳ καί υἱούς σου ἀποδείξεις, μᾶλλον μέν οὖν ἀδελφούς σου καί Θεοῦ υἱούς, Πατρός σου, τούτοις καί συνομιλεῖς τε καί αὐτούς ὁρῶν ὁρᾶσαι ὑπ᾿ αὐτῶν ἐκείνων πάλιν. ∆εῖξον οὖν τήν εὐσπλαγχνίαν, δεῖξον τήν φιλανθρωπίαν καί τό ἔλεός σου, Σῶτερ, (384) Ποίων ἄρα τῶν κτισμάτων; Τῶν ἐνύλων καί ἀΰλων˙ ἔνυλα γάρ, ἅπερ βλέπεις, ἄϋλοι δέ ἄγγελοί γε. Μέσον τούτων οὖν, σοί λέγω, ζῷον ἄνθρωπος, διπλοῦν δέ˙ ἐν αἰσθητοῖς μέν ἄϋλον, ἐν ἀΰλοις αἰσθητόν δέ. Τοῦτον οὖν ὡς αἰσθητόν μέν κύριον τῶν ὁρωμένων καί δεσπότην εἰργασάμην, δοῦλα ὡς ὁρατά πάντα αὐτῷ μόνῳ ὑποτάξας, ὅπως βλέπῃ μου τά ἔργα καί δοξάζῃ με τόν κτίστην˙ ὡς δέ λογικόν τε ὄντα καί νοερῶς καθορῶντα,
