Of men, beloved, some are punished both here and there, but others
here only, others there only, and others neither here nor there. Both here and there, like the crucifiers of Christ; for they paid the penalty here, when they suffered those irremediable things when the city was captured, and there they will endure a most harsh one; like the citizens of Sodom, like many others; but there only, like the rich man who was tormented in the flame, and was not master even of a drop; and here, like the fornicator among the Corinthians; but neither here nor there, like the apostles, like the prophets, like the blessed Job; for what they suffered was not punishment, but contests and struggles. Let us strive, therefore, to be of their portion; but if not of theirs, at least of those who put off their sins here. For that judgment is terrible, and the retribution inexorable, and the punishment irremediable. But if you wish not to pay the penalty even here, judge yourself, demand an account of yourself; hear Paul saying, that If we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. If you do this, proceeding on the way you will also come to a crown. And how shall we exact a penalty, he says, from ourselves? Mourn, groan bitterly, humble yourself, afflict yourself, recall your sins in detail; this is no small torment of the soul. If anyone has been in compunction, he knows that the soul is punished by this more than anything; if anyone has been in remembrance of sin, he knows the pain from it. For this reason God sets righteousness as a prize for such repentance, saying: Declare thou first thy sins, that thou mayest be justified. For it is not, it is no small thing for correction to have gathered all our sins together, to turn them over continually in detail and to consider them. For he who does this will be so filled with compunction, as not to think himself worthy even to live; and he who thinks this, will be softer than any wax. For do not speak to me of fornication only, nor of these obvious things, but it is necessary to gather together also secret plots, and slanders, and evil speakings, and vainglory, and envy, and all such things; for neither will these bring a small punishment. For the reviler will be cast into hell, and the drunkard has nothing in common with the kingdom, and he who does not love his neighbor so offends God as not to be profited even by his martyrdom, and he who neglects his own has denied the faith, and he who overlooks the poor is sent into the fire. Therefore, do not think these things are small, but gather them all together, and write them as in a book. For if you write them, God blots them out, just as, if you do not write them, God both records them and demands a penalty. It is much better, therefore, for them to be written by us and blotted out from above, than the opposite, that while we forget them, God should bring them before our eyes on that day. Therefore, that this may not happen, let us consider all things with exactness, and we shall find ourselves liable for many things. For who is pure of covetousness? Do not speak to me of the measure, for even in a small matter we shall pay the 63.894 same penalty. Consider this, and repent. Who has been freed from insolence? for this casts into hell. Who has not slandered his neighbor secretly? who has not become desperate? and this one is more impure than all. And who has not looked at a woman with licentious eyes? but this one is a complete adulterer. Who has not been angry with his brother without a cause? but this one is in danger of the council. Who has not sworn? but this is of the evil one. Who has not sworn falsely? but this is more of the evil one. Who has not served mammon? but this one has fallen from the true service of Christ. I have other things more than these to say; but these are sufficient, and enough to bring to compunction one who is not a stone nor utterly insensible. For if each of them casts into hell, what will they not work when they all come together? See, he says, that you despise not one of these little ones; for their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. For every believer has an angel. Ἐνταῦθα μὲν καὶ ἐκεῖ, ὡς σταυρωταὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ· καὶ γὰρ καὶ ἐνταῦθα ἔδοσαν δίκην, ἡνίκα ἔπαθον τὰ ἀνήκεστα ἐκεῖνα, τῆς πόλεως ἁλούσης, καὶ ἐκεῖ χαλεπωτάτην ὑπομενοῦσιν· ὡς οἱ Σοδόμων πολῖται, ὡς ἕτεροι πολλοί· ἐκεῖ δὲ μόνον, ὡς ὁ πλούσιος ὁ ἀποτηγανιζόμενος, καὶ οὐδὲ σταγόνος κύριος ὤν· ἐνταῦθα δὲ, ὡς ὁ πεπορνευκὼς παρὰ Κορινθίοις· οὔτε δὲ ἐνταῦθα, οὔτε ἐκεῖ, ὡς οἱ ἀπόστολοι, ὡς οἱ προφῆται, ὡς ὁ μακάριος Ἰώβ· οὐ γὰρ δὴ κολάσεως ἦν ἅπερ ἔπαθον, ἀλλ' ἀγώνων καὶ παλαισμάτων. Σπουδάσωμεν τοίνυν τῆς τούτων εἶναι μερίδος· εἰ δὲ μὴ τούτων, κἂν τῶν ἐνταῦθα ἀποδυομένων τὰ ἁμαρτήματα. Καὶ γὰρ φοβερὸν ἐκεῖνο τὸ κριτήριον, καὶ ἀπαραίτητος ἡ τιμωρία, καὶ ἀνήκεστος ἡ κόλασις. Εἰ δὲ βούλει μηδὲ ἐνταῦθα δοῦναι δίκην, σαυτῷ δίκασον, ἀπαίτησόν σου τὰς εὐθύνας· ἄκουσον Παύλου λέγοντος, ὅτι Εἰ ἐκρίνομεν ἑαυτοὺς, οὐκ ἂν ἐκρινόμεθα. Ἂν τοῦτο ποιῇς, ὁδῷ προβαίνων καὶ ἐπὶ στέφανον ἥξεις. Καὶ πῶς ἀπαιτήσομεν δίκην, φησὶν, ἑαυτούς; Πένθησον, στέναξον πικρὸν, ταπείνωσον σαυτὸν, κάκωσον, ἀνάμνησον τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων κατ' εἶδος· οὐ μικρὰ τοῦτο βάσανος ψυχῆς. Εἴ τις γέγονεν ἐν κατανύξει, οἶδεν ὅτι μάλιστα πάντων ἡ ψυχὴ τούτῳ κολάζεται· εἴ τις γέγονεν ἐν ἁμαρτίας μνήμῃ, οἶδε τὴν ἐντεῦθεν ὀδύνην. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο δικαιοσύνην ἔπαθλον τίθησιν ὁ Θεὸς τῇ τοιαύτῃ μετανοίᾳ, λέγων· Λέγε σὺ πρῶτον τὰς ἁμαρτίας σου, ἵνα δικαιωθῇς. Οὐ γάρ ἐστιν, οὐκ ἔστι μικρὸν εἰς διόρθωσιν τὸ πάντα συναγαγόντας τὰ ἁμαρτήματα, κατ' εἶδος αὐτὰ στρέφειν συνεχῶς καὶ ἀναλογίζεσθαι. Ὁ γὰρ τοῦτο ποιῶν οὕτω κατανυγήσεται, ὡς μήτε τοῦ ζῇν ἑαυτὸν ἄξιον εἶναι νομίζειν· ὁ δὲ τοῦτο νομίζων, κηροῦ παντὸς ἁπαλώτερος ἔσται. Μὴ γάρ μοι πορνείας εἴπῃς μόνον, μηδὲ ταῦτα τὰ δῆλα, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰς λαθραίους ἐπιβουλὰς, καὶ τὰς συκοφαντίας, καὶ τὰς κακηγορίας, καὶ τὰς κενοδοξίας, καὶ τὸν φθόνον, καὶ πάντα τὰ τοιαῦτα συνάγειν χρή· οὐδὲ γὰρ ταῦτα μικρὰν οἴσει κόλασιν. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ὁ λοίδορος εἰς γέενναν ἐμπεσεῖται, καὶ ὁ μεθύων οὐδὲν κοινὸν ἔχει πρὸς τὴν βασιλείαν, καὶ ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν πλησίον οὕτω προσκρούει τῷ Θεῷ, ὡς μηδὲ μαρτυροῦντος αὐτοῦ ὠφελεῖσθαι, καὶ ὁ τῶν οἰκείων ἀμελῶν τὴν πίστιν ἤρνηται, καὶ ὁ πένητας περιορῶν εἰς τὸ πῦρ πέμπεται. Μὴ τοίνυν μικρὰ ταῦτα εἶναι νόμιζε, ἀλλὰ συνάγαγε πάντα, καὶ ὡς ἐν βιβλίῳ γράφε. Ἂν γὰρ σὺ γράψῃς, ὁ Θεὸς ἐξαλείφει, ὥσπερ οὖν, ἐὰν μὴ σὺ γράψῃς, ὁ Θεὸς καὶ ἐγγράφει καὶ δίκην ἀπαιτεῖ. Πολὺ τοίνυν βέλτιον παρ' ἡμῶν αὐτὰ γραφῆναι, καὶ ἄνωθεν ἐξαλειφθῆναι, ἢ τοὐναντίον, ἡμῶν ἐπιλανθανομένων, τὸν Θεὸν αὐτὰ πρὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ἐνεγκεῖν τῶν ἡμετέρων κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην. Ἵν' οὖν μὴ τοῦτο γένηται, πάντα μετὰ ἀκριβείας ἀναλογιζώμεθα, καὶ εὑρήσομεν πολλῶν ἑαυτοὺς ὑπευθύνους ὄντας. Τίς γὰρ πλεονεξίας καθαρός; Μὴ γάρ μοι τὸ μέτρον εἴπῃς, ἀλλὰ κἀν τῷ μικρῷ τὴν 63.894 αὐτὴν δώσομεν δίκην. Τοῦτο ἐννόει, καὶ μετανόει. Τίς ὕβρεως ἀπήλλακται; τοῦτο δὲ εἰς γέενναν ἐμβάλλει. Τίς λάθρα τὸν πλησίον οὐ κακηγόρησε; τίς οὐκ ἀπενοήθη; οὗτος δὲ πάντων ἀκαθαρτότερος. Τίς δὲ οὐκ εἶδεν ἀκολάστοις ὀφθαλμοῖς γυναῖκα; οὗτος δὲ μοιχὸς ἀπηρτισμένος. Τίς οὐκ ὠργίσθη τῷ ἀδελφῷ εἰκῆ; οὗτος δὲ ἔνοχος τῷ συνεδρίῳ. Τίς οὐκ ὤμοσεν; οὗτος δὲ τοῦ πονηροῦ. Τίς οὐκ ἐπιώρκησεν; οὗτος δὲ τοῦ πονηροῦ πλέον. Τίς οὐκ ἐδούλευσε τῷ μαμωνᾷ; οὗτος δὲ τῆς γνησίας ἐξέπεσε τοῦ Χριστοῦ δουλείας. Ἔχω καὶ ἕτερα πλείονα τούτων εἰπεῖν· ἀρκεῖ δὲ ταῦτα, καὶ ἱκανὰ τὸν μὴ λίθον ὄντα μηδὲ σφόδρα ἀναίσθητον εἰς κατάνυξιν ἀγαγεῖν. Εἰ γὰρ ἕκαστον αὐτῶν εἰς γέενναν ἐμβάλλει, πάντα ὁμοῦ συνελθόντα τί οὐκ ἐργάσεται; Ὁρᾶτε, φησὶ, μὴ καταφρονήσητε ἑνὸς τῶν μικρῶν τούτων· οἱ γὰρ ἄγγελοι αὐτῶν διαπαντὸς βλέπουσι τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς. Ἕκαστος γὰρ πιστὸς ἄγγελον ἔχει. Ἐπεὶ καὶ ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἕκαστος ἀνὴρ τῶν εὐδοκίμων ἄγγελον εἶχε, καθώς
