HOMILY 47. On not approaching the divine mysteries unworthily. Since we have made mention of this sacrifice, I wish 63.896 to say a few things to you
to the initiated, things small in measure, but having great power and benefit; for what is said 63.897 is not ours, but of the divine Spirit. What then is it? Many partake of this sacrifice once in the present year, others twice, others many times. Therefore, our discourse is useful for all, and for those sitting in the desert; for they partake once a year, and often every two years. What then? Whom shall we approve? Neither those who come once, nor those who come many times, but those with a pure conscience, with a clean heart, those with an unstained life; let such always approach; but those who are not such, not even once. For he who eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself, as the Apostle says. These things are given to the saints; this the deacon also proclaims, calling the saints with that awesome voice. For since it is not possible for a man to know the things of his neighbor, except for the spirit that is in him, he utters the voice, "The holy things for the holy." If anyone is not holy, let him not approach. He does not say simply, pure from sins, but, holy; for it is not only the release from sins that makes one holy, but also the presence of the Spirit, and the wealth of good works. And what is the sin? To approach not with awe, but beating the breasts, and shouting, and the rest. These things I have said many times, and I will not cease to say them. Do you not see at the Olympic games, when the president of the games with the crown on his head is present, how there is good order when the herald cries for silence? How is it not strange, that where the devil holds his procession, there is great silence; but where Christ calls us to himself, there is much noise? It is rather a calm on the sea, and waves in the harbor. Why do you make a noise, tell me? The necessity of business calls you, by all means. Do you even know that you have business at that hour? Do you even remember at all that you are on earth? And how is this not of a mind of stone, to think at that time that you are on earth, and not dancing with the angels, with whom you also sent up that mystical hymn to God, the song of victory, "Holy, holy, holy"? For this reason Christ called us eagles, saying, "Where the body is, there also are the eagles," so that we might tread the heavens, so that we might fly high, being lifted up by the wings of the spirit; but we, like serpents, crawl on the ground, and eat earth. Do you wish me to say whence the noise comes? Because we do not always close the doors to you, but we allow you to depart before the final thanksgiving; this is a mark of great contempt. What are you doing, O man? When Christ is present, the angels are standing by, the table is set forth, you yourself leave and depart? And when invited to a supper, you do not dare to leave before your friends? Do you wish me to say whose work they are doing, who depart before the thanksgiving? When Judas partook of the last supper on that final night, while all the others were reclining, he himself rushed out and left. Such men imitate him. For if he had not gone out, he would not have become a traitor, he would not have perished; if he had not separated himself from the shepherd, he would not have been caught by the wild beast. Do you see that the final prayer after the sacrifice is according to that model? For he went out with the Jews, while these went out with the Master after singing a hymn. I say these things, not that you should make a noise and shout, but that with great silence and good order we may touch this sacred 63.898 sacrifice, so that we may both cleanse our soul and obtain the eternal good things. Do not pay attention that it is mere bread and wine; for it is Body and Blood according to the Master's declaration; do not judge the matter from the taste, but be fully assured by faith without any doubt. And when you approach, not with hands outstretched, but make your left hand a throne for the right, and hollowing your palm, as about to receive a king,

εἰπεῖν τοὺς μεμυημένους, μικρὰ μὲν τῷ μέτρῳ, μεγάλην δ' ἔχοντα τὴν ἰσχὺν καὶ τὴν ὠφέλειαν οὐ γὰρ ἡμέτερά εἰσι τὰ λεγό 63.897 μενα, ἀλλὰ τοῦ θείου Πνεύματος. Τί οὖν ἐστι; Πολλοὶ τῆς θυσίας ταύτης ἅπαξ μεταλαμβάνουσι τοῦ παρόντος ἐνιαυτοῦ, ἕτεροι δὲ δὶς, ἄλλοι πολλάκις. Πρὸς ἅπαντας οὖν ὁ λόγος ἡμῖν ἐστι χρήσιμος, καὶ πρὸς αὐτοὺς τοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καθεζομένους· ἐκεῖνοι γὰρ ἅπαξ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ μετέχουσι, πολλάκις δὲ καὶ διὰ δύο ἐτῶν. Τί οὖν; τίνας ἀποδεξόμεθα; Οὔτε τοὺς ἄπαξ, οὔτε τοὺς πολλάκις, ἀλλὰ τοὺς καὶ μετὰ καθαροῦ συνειδότος, μετὰ καθαρᾶς καρδίας, τοὺς μετὰ βίου ἀμολύντου· οἱ τοιοῦτοι ἀεὶ προσιέτωσαν· οἱ δὲ μὴ τοιοῦτοι, μηδὲ ἅπαξ. Ὁ γὰρ ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων ἀναξίως, κρῖμα ἑαυτῷ ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει, ὥς φησιν ὁ Ἀπόστολος. Ταῦτα δέδοται τοῖς ἁγίοις· τοῦτο καὶ ὁ διάκονος ἐπιφωνεῖ, τοὺς ἁγίους καλῶν διὰ τῆς φρικτῆς ἐκείνης φωνῆς. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ οὐκ ἔστι δυνατὸ ἀνθρώπῳ εἰδέναι τὰ τοῦ πλησίον, εἰ μὴ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἐν αὐτῷ, αὐτὴν ἀφίησι τὴν φωνὴν, Τὰ ἅγια τοῖς ἁγίοις. Εἴ τις οὐκ ἔστιν ἅγιος, μὴ προσιέτω. Οὐχ ἁπλῶς φησιν, ἁμαρτημάτων καθαρὸς, ἀλλὰ, ἅγιος· τὸν γὰρ ἅγιον οὐχὶ τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων ἀπαλλαγὴ ποιεῖ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ τοῦ Πνεύματος παρουσία, καὶ τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἔργων ὁ πλοῦτος. Τί δέ ἐστι τὸ ἁμάρτημα; Τὸ μὴ μετὰ φρίκης προσιέναι, ἀλλὰ τύπτοντας τὰ στήθη, καὶ ἀλαλάζοντας, καὶ τὰ λοιπά. Ταῦτα πολλάκις εἶπον, καὶ λέγων οὐ παύσομαι. Οὐχ ὁρᾶτε ἐπὶ τῶν Ὀλυμπίων, ὅταν ὁ ἀγωνοθέτης ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς ἔχων, πῶς ἡ εὐταξία τοῦ κήρυκος βοῶντος ἡσυχίαν εἶναι; Πῶς οὐκ ἄτοπον, ἔνθα μὲν ὁ διάβολος πομπεύει, πολλὴν εἶναι τὴν ἡσυχίαν· ἔνθα δὲ ὁ Χριστὸς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν συγκαλεῖ, πολὺν εἶναι τὸν θόρυβον; μᾶλλον ἐν πελάγει γαλήνη, καὶ ἐν λιμένι κύματα. Τί θορυβῇ, εἰπέ μοι; Πραγμάτων ἀνάγκη καλεῖ πάντως. Ὅλως γὰρ οἶδας, ὅτι πράγματα ἔχεις ἐν τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐκείνῃ; μέμνησαι δὲ ὅλως, ὅτι ἐπὶ γῆς εἶ; Καὶ πῶς οὐχὶ τοῦτο λιθίνης διανοίας, τὸ νομίζειν κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν ἐκεῖνον ἐπὶ γῆς εἶναι, καὶ οὐχὶ μετὰ τῶν ἀγγέλων χορεύειν, μεθ' ὧν καὶ τὸ μυστικὸν ἐκεῖνο μέλος ἀνέπεμψας τῷ Θεῷ, ἐπινίκιον ᾠδὴν, Ἅγιος, ἅγιος, ἅγιος; ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ἀετοὺς ἡμᾶς ἐκάλεσεν ὁ Χριστὸς εἰπὼν, Ὅπου τὸ πτῶμα, ἐκεῖ καὶ οἱ ἀετοὶ, ἵνα οὐρανοβατῶμεν, ἵνα ὑψηλὰ πετώμεθα, τοῖς πτεροῖς τοῦ πνεύματος κουφιζόμενοι· ἡμεῖς δὲ κατὰ τοὺς ὄφεις χαμαὶ συρόμεθα, καὶ γῆν ἐσθίομεν. Βούλεσθε εἴπω, πόθεν ὁ θόρυβος γίνεται; Ὅτι οὐ διαπαντὸς τὰς θύρας ὑμῖν ἀποκλείομεν, ἀλλὰ συγχωροῦμεν πρὸ τῆς ἐσχάτης εὐχαριστίας ἀναχωρεῖν· τοῦτο πολλῆς καταφρονήσεώς ἐστι. Τί ποιεῖς, ἄνθρωπε; τοῦ Χριστοῦ παρόντος, τῶν ἀγγέλων παρεστώτων, τῆς τραπέζης προκειμένης, αὐτὸς καταλείπεις καὶ ἀναχωρεῖς; καὶ ἐπὶ δείπνῳ μὲν κληθεὶς, οὐ τολμᾷς ἀναχωρῆσαι πρὸ τῶν φίλων; Βούλεσθε εἴπω τίνος ἔργον ποιοῦσιν οἱ πρὸ τῆς εὐχαριστίας ἀναχωροῦντες; Ὅτε ἐκοινώνησε τὸ ἔσχατον δεῖπνον Ἰούδας τὴν τελευταίαν νύκτα ἐκείνην, τῶν ἄλλων πάντων ἀνακειμένων, αὐτὸς προπηδήσας ἐξέβη. Ἐκεῖνον μιμοῦνται οἱ τοιοῦτοι. Εἰ μὴ γὰρ ἐξῆλθεν, οὐκ ἂν ἐγένετο προδότης, οὐκ ἂν ἀπώλετο· εἰ μὴ τοῦ ποιμένος ἑαυτὸν ἐχώρισεν, οὐκ ἂν θηριάλωτος γέγονεν. Ὁρᾷς ὅτι ἡ ἐσχάτη μετὰ τὴν θυσίαν εὐχὴ κατ' ἐκεῖνον γίνεται τὸν τύπον; Ἐκεῖνος γὰρ μετὰ Ἰουδαίων, οὗτοι μετὰ τοῦ ∆εσπότου ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον. Ταῦτα λέγω, οὐχ ἵνα θορυβῆτε καὶ κράζητε, ἀλλὰ μετὰ πολλῆς σιγῆς καὶ εὐκοσμίας τῆς ἱερᾶς ταύτης 63.898 ἁψώμεθα θυσίας, ἵνα καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν ἐκκαθάρωμεν, καὶ τῶν αἰωνίων ἀγαθῶν ἐπιτύχωμεν. Μὴ πρόσεχε, ὅτι ἄρτος ψιλὸς καὶ οἶνός ἐστι· σῶμα γὰρ καὶ αἷμα κατὰ τὴν ∆εσποτικὴν τυγχάνει ἀπόφασιν· μὴ ἀπὸ τῆς γεύσεως κρίνῃς τὸ πρᾶγμα, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως πληροφοροῦ ἀνενδοιάστως. Προσιὼν δὲ, μὴ τεταμέναις χερσὶν, ἀλλὰ τὴν ἀριστερὰν θρόνον ποίησον τῆς δεξιᾶς, καὶ κοιλάνας τὴν παλάμην, ὡς μέλλων βασιλέα ὑποδέχεσθαι,
