The soldiers, having taken his body which was left behind, burned it in the ox market. And Crispus, the son-in-law of Phocas, was cooperating in these things, whom Heraclius, upon becoming emperor, made general of Cappadocia; but when he planned a rebellion there, he brought him before the senate, and the emperor, holding in his hand the documents written by him against Heraclius, striking Crispus on the head with the paper, said, "Wretch, you did not make a good son-in-law; how will you make a true friend?" Therefore he makes him a cleric, and confines him in the monastery of Chora, and there he dies. And a certain holy monk in the days of Phocas, arguing with God, said, "Lord, why have you given such a lawless emperor to the Christians?" and an invisible voice came to him, saying that "I could not find one worse than him to match the wickedness of those now dwelling in the city."

Year of the world #22ργʹ, of the divine incarnation χθʹ. Heraclius, emperor of the Romans, reigned 31 years, having been crowned by Sergius the patriarch in the oratory of Saint Stephen in the palace; and crowned at the same time as him was also his betrothed, Fabia, who was renamed 1.714 Eudocia Augusta. This Heraclius was middle-aged, strong, broad-chested, with fine eyes, slightly grey-eyed, with blond hair, of fair complexion, having a broad and long, flowing beard. And when he came to the dignity of the emperorship, he immediately had his hair and beard trimmed in the imperial style. In this year the Persians took Apamea of Syria and Edessa, and came as far as Antioch; and the Romans, having fought them, were defeated, and the entire army of the Romans was destroyed, except for a few. In the 2nd year of Heraclius, the Persians took Caesarea of Cappadocia, and took many thousands captive in it. Heraclius, having taken over, as has been said, found the affairs of the Roman state in a state of paralysis; for the Avars had laid Europe waste, and the Persians had destroyed all of Asia and taken cities captive. And seeing these things, he was at a loss, wondering what to do. In this year a son was born to the emperor by Eudocia, Heraclius the younger, the new Constantine, on the third of the month of May. In the same year Eudocia the Augusta died. In the 3rd year Epiphania the daughter of Heraclius and Heraclius his son, the new Constantine, were crowned by Sergius the patriarch. And in the same year the Saracens campaigned against Syria, and after ravaging a number of places, they returned. In the 4th year the Persians took Damascus and 1.715 took it captive. And Heraclius sent an embassy to Chosroes, telling him to cease from mercilessly shedding the blood of men, and to set and receive terms. But he paid no heed to these things. And in the same year Heraclius married Martina, and proclaimed her Augusta, with Sergius the patriarch crowning her. In the 5th year the Persians took the Jordan and Palestine and the holy city by war, and they killed in it by the hands of the Jews, as some say, 90,000; for they, buying the Christians as each was able, killed them. And having taken Zacharias the patriarch of Jerusalem and the precious wood, along with many captives, they led them away into Persia. In the same year another Constantine was born to the emperor by Martina, and he was baptized in Blachernae by Sergius the patriarch. In the 6th year the Persians took all of Egypt and Alexandria and Libya as far as Ethiopia, and having taken many captives and spoils and money, they returned. But being unable to take Carthage, they left behind besiegers and withdrew. In the 7th year Constantine Heraclius held the consulship, and he appointed as Caesar Constantine the younger, his own brother, who was born of Heraclius and Martina. 1.716 In the 8th year again Heraclius sent ambassadors into Persia to Chosroes, asking for
