of things happening. 1254 Ps 144,6 Those who... Just as it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God and "Shout to God with the voice of joy, for the Lord most high is fearful," will say practically and through right understanding (for through this very fearing of God and having exceeding reverence), they will declare to him the power of his fearful works. Then, having been benefited by sinlessness with virtue, they fear his greatness and not "They will declare the power of your fearful works" will they relate, with the knowledge that it is infinite and has no end; for they do not relate it as having comprehended and limited it in their mind, but as surpassing all created comprehension. For only the Son knows who the Father is, and the Father who the Son is; but even if the Son reveals the Father to whom he wills, yet he manifests him as it is possible for created beings to see, according to the proportion of preparation one has. 1255 Ps 144,7 Since the belch that occurs sensibly has fullness as its cause (for one who is filled with food sends out vapors carrying the scent of the quality of the things eaten), it would be consistent to say that one who has been fed with the words concerning the goodness of God, being filled with these spiritual foods, intensely belches forth the memory of the goodness of God which is equivalent to his kindness. But since, in addition to knowing God as good, it is also profitable to have a conception of his righteousness by which he judges, next to "They will pour forth the memory of your goodness," he added, "And in your righteousness they will rejoice." The righteousness of God can be his only-begotten offspring, in whom they rejoice, having obtained him "Who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption." For since by the goodness of God he was sent to proclaim release to the captives, he has become redemption to those freed from captivity, who, also remembering the goodness of God that came upon them, pour forth the memory of it; but also, having perceived how they were justified, since he who redeemed them became also righteousness for them from God, they rejoice in this righteousness, which is of God. And it is possible to suppose that all practical virtue, but also the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus to all who believe, is indicated in the present saying. 1256 Ps 144,13 He rules and reigns over all things which God has made through his Word and his wisdom, whence he is also Pantokrator. Since, therefore, the ages, being a part of all things, have been made by God through the Savior according to the scripture that says "Through whom he also made the ages," he reigns over them all. And what is spoken of by Paul as divine is in harmony with what has been said, being thus: "To the king of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only wise God." For to reign over all the ages is the same as to be king of the ages. Consider if it is said of the Son, "Your kingdom is a kingdom of all the ages," as he reigns over the house of Jacob, his kingdom having no end; for ruling and reigning over all things that have come to be through him, he reigns for ever and ever. Whence, as with the other attributes belonging to the Father, so also he shares in the title of Pantokrator. If, then, the Father is king of the ages and the Son's kingdom is a kingdom of all the ages, his kingdom is reasonably without beginning and without end, and he reigns before the ages and after them; for "The Lord reigns for the age and for ever and ever," and "Our God is king before the age," that is, before every age. Consistently with the kingdom, his dominion also extends to all generations; and he is master of those things that are under time and generation, but he reigns over those who have gone beyond the temporary things by considering the things not seen and eternal. 1257 Ps 144,13a And God is faithful in all his words. It is said not that he offers them from faith or by faith, but that he is worthy to be believed. Of course
