of those who are loved; the second is because of your sympathy toward our lowliness, when we were in the East, at which time you sent us your greeting and all that concerned the most impious prelate of the Smyrnaeans; the third is because of the reputation of your orthodox mind, which our spiritual and beloved brother and letter-carrier has more abundantly declared, and I would add also because of our common friend, lord Arkadios, I mean your foster-brother and soul-mate, whom you also care for among your own, as I learn. But since it is the work of a friend also to remind the one who is loved of what is necessary, we remind and exhort your majesty to carry out with forbearance and attention the ministry entrusted to you by the great emperors. and let him not tell me that he is forced by fear to act thus; for nothing is greater than the fear of God and nothing is more necessary than the salvation of the soul. for what will it profit a man, he says, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? and the physician must be sought in times of crisis and the pilot in the storm; or do you not see that it is a great storm and a God-sent scourge? Heal, master, steer, that you may both save yourself and propitiate those who are responsible and restore them to stability, enduring the threat as one who is himself in the body and liable to fall; for thus you will also acquire God as merciful, and when God cares for you, who is there to harm you? Remember, my lord, that you are also flesh and, as you fear blows, spare others from blows; since, with what measure we measure, it will be measured to us in return. Remember, good brother, that we are here today and we do not know what the morrow will bring, so that we may not be found mocked and cursed both in this age and in the one to come. Remember that fearful and inexorable sentence, by which the merciless will be sent out into unquenchable fire. Remember that the persons who have been well treated will stand beside us, and those who have suffered dreadfully at our hands; and what will it profit then that we are heard to be competent here? No, I beg you, let us not thus thrust the sword into ourselves; I speak as a friend and one who is greatly concerned, master. To end my speech, may I from now on hear good reports and reports of humane correction concerning my lord, so that I may sing, so that I may know that I shall be heeded in the future also by my friend. For already our neighbors here are fearful and trembling from what they hear, although they have done nothing wrong; "4A tyrant is he who is coming, he brings a sword, a poor man will not endure a threat; he receives it not in order to resist, even if he did not wish it, for this he is not responsible; for not even I myself, if so apprehended, would be able to act otherwise"5. But if the cause is beyond these things, fine, but even so sympathetically, as in the eyes of the Lord; from which also the subject populace will be more stable, being enslaved by goodwill to the victorious emperors. 441 {1To Hypatius, my child}1 Not without feeling did we the humble receive, O child, the holy falling-asleep of James the confessor of Christ and our most venerable brother, but yet not without great joy either. The first on account of spiritual affection (for what else than a son, and such a son, of whom I because of my sins am not worthy to be called even a servant?), the second on account of hope, or rather on account of the profit, and not only for us, for whom as a member he was naturally constituted a sacred adornment, but indeed for the whole church of God; for what do you think the man was? Was he not a confessor? Was he not a martyr? Was he not a holy one? From his youth he strove ascetically, having been lawfully subjected, having acted manfully against the passions, having kept his body a virgin through continent buffetings and enslavements, thus eating as it chanced, thus sleeping, yet being healthy so as to astonish those who saw him, for the most part withdrawn, as much as was possible returning to himself and from there winging himself toward heavenly love. And let no one think that I am inventing words for the sake of the hearers' entertainment; God is my witness and his tutor, the holy Lucian, though hard to rouse, from whom also my
