it is written in the Scriptures, that someone should take up the sins of another and make a defense for them, unless the one who sinned has first shown repentance worthy of it and labors analogous to the type of sin, and has borne its fruits; for the voice of the forerunner of the Word says: "Bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'," since our Lord Himself also said this concerning those foolishly disposed: "Amen I say to you, even if Moses and Daniel should stand to deliver their sons and daughters, they shall not deliver them." What then shall we do, or what way shall we, who wish to repent, devise for the remission of the debt and the recovery from the fall? God granting it, listen, so that I may make a covenant with each of you.
7. Seek out a mediator, if you wish, and a physician and a good counselor, so that as a good counselor he may suitably suggest ways of repentance with good counsel, as a physician he will give you a medicine appropriate for each wound, and as a mediator, through prayer and intercession to God, he, standing before Him face to face, may propitiate the Divine on your behalf. Therefore, do not strive to make a flatterer or a slave to his belly your counselor and ally, lest, by going along with your will, he teach you not what God loves but what you accept, and you remain again truly an irreconcilable enemy, nor an inexperienced physician, lest with much severity and untimely cuttings (430) and cauterizations he send you to the abyss of despair, or again, with excessive sympathy, he leave you sick while you think you are healthy, and—what is most terrible—hand you over to eternal punishment when you do not expect it; for this is what the sickness of the soul here, dying with us, brings about. But I do not think a mediator between God and men is found so simply. "For not all who are from Israel are Israelites," but those who clearly understand the name and the very power of the name and are a mind seeing God; nor are all who are called by the name of Christ truly Christians. "For not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,'" says Christ, "will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father," just as also, "Many," He says, "will say to me on that day, 'Lord, did we not cast out demons in your name?' and I will say to them, 'Amen I say to you, I do not know you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'"
8. For this reason, therefore, we all must pay attention, brothers, both those who mediate and those who have sinned and those themselves who wish to be reconciled to God, so that neither the mediators draw down wrath instead of a reward, nor those who have offended and are eager to be reconciled encounter an enemy and murderer and evil counselor instead of a mediator. For such men will hear with a dreadful threat: "Who made you rulers and judges of my people?" and again: "Hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." A log is one passion or some desire that darkens the eye of the soul. And again: "Physician, heal yourself," and again: "But to the sinner God said: Why (431) do you declare my statutes and take my covenant in your mouth? You have hated instruction and cast my words behind you," and Paul says: "Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls; but God is able, through his faithful servant, to make him stand."
9. For all these reasons, therefore, I shudder and tremble, my brothers and fathers, and I exhort you all, securing myself also through this exhortation to you, not to be contemptuous about these divine and awesome mysteries for all, nor to play with things not to be played with, nor against our soul for the sake of vainglory or
