they made, accusing her that by sending money to the generals of the Roman army she had corrupted the statues of Theoderic, avenging the murders of both her father Symmachus and 7.20.30 her husband Boethius. But Totila did not allow her to suffer anything unpleasant, but kept both her and all the other women safe from outrage, although the Goths were especially desirous of having intercourse with them. 7.20.31 For which reason it came to pass that not one of them was violated in her body, whether she lived with her husband or was a virgin or a widow, and from this deed Totila gained great renown for his self-control. 7.21.1 On the next day Totila called all the Goths together and spoke as follows: "It is not to offer you any new or unknown exhortation that I have gathered you here, my fellow soldiers, but to say those things which I have often said to you, and which, when you received them, have resulted in your obtaining the greatest of blessings. 7.21.2 Therefore, do not on this account treat this 7.21.3 exhortation now with any contempt. For it is not likely that a man should become surfeited with words that lead to good fortune, even if one seems to be wearied by much speaking; since it is not right to give up the benefit derived from them. 7.21.4 I say that formerly, though we came together as two hundred thousand of the most warlike soldiers, possessed of extraordinary wealth, and displaying, as much as possible, an abundance of horses and arms, and a great crowd of most wise old men, which seems to be most advantageous for those entering into contests, we were defeated by seven thousand Greeks, and were deprived of our rule and all our other possessions for no reason at all. 7.21.5 But now, though we have been left few in number, naked and wretched, and experienced in none of all these things, it has been our lot to conquer our enemies, who are more than twenty thousand. 7.21.6 In short, such are the things that have been accomplished; but the causes of these events I will immediately explain to you who already know them: that the Goths, formerly holding justice of less account than all other things, committed unholy deeds both against each other and against their Roman subjects, and for these reasons, as was natural, God, being moved against them, then marched with our enemies. 7.21.7 And for this reason, though we far surpassed our opponents in numbers and valour and in all other preparation for war, we were defeated by some unseen and least recognized power. 7.21.8 Therefore, it will be in your power to keep these blessings, by preserving justice, clearly. For if you change, the things from God will immediately become very hostile. 7.21.9 For He is not accustomed to ally Himself with a race of men or with the nature of nations, but with those by whom the principle of justice is more honored. And it is no trouble 7.21.10 for Him to transfer these blessings to others. For it is only in the will of man to refrain from doing wrong, but it is the nature of God that all things should lie in His power. 7.21.11 I say, therefore, that you must maintain justice both toward one another and toward your subjects. For to say this would be the same as to say that your good fortune will be preserved forever." 7.21.12 Having said so much to the Goths, Totila also called together the members of the Roman senate and reproached and reviled them at length, because, though they had received many benefits from both Theoderic and Atalaric, and had always been established in all the offices of state and had administered the government, and had been clothed with a great amount of wealth, they were then seized with great ingratitude toward the Goths, their benefactors, and had looked to an unnecessary revolt to their own ruin and had brought the Greeks against their country, having suddenly become traitors to themselves. 7.21.13 And he inquired whether they had ever suffered any evil from the 7.21.14 Goths. And he compelled them to say if any good had come to them from the Emperor Justinian, recounting everything in order: that they had been deprived of almost all their offices, and being tormented by the so-called logothetes, they had been forced to pay for the accounts of their administration under the Goths, and, being afflicted by the war, they were paying public taxes to the Greeks no less than in time of peace; and he added many other things to his speech,
