fire and consumes the whole world. Then again he lets go the clod * between the new age, so that all the souls of sinners may be bound forever. These things will happen then, when the statue comes. But all the 3.71 emanations, Jesus in the little ship and the mother of life and the twelve pilots and the virgin of light and the † third elder in the great ship and the living spirit and the wall of the great fire and the wall of the wind and of the air and of the water and of the inner living fire * dwell toward the little luminary, until the fire consumes the whole world in some number of years, the quantity of which I have not learned. And after 3.72 these things there will be a restoration of the two natures and the rulers will inhabit their lower parts, but the father the upper parts, having received back his own. And he handed down all this teaching to his three disciples, commanding each to journey to different regions; and Addas was allotted the parts of the east, and Thomas was assigned the land of the Syrians, and another, Hermeias, made the journey to Egypt. And to this day they remain there, wishing to establish the foundation of the doctrine. 32. These are the things which I have set forth from the aforementioned book of Archelaus. And thus he established his school of the sowing of tares in the world, and vomited forth the tares of his teaching. And how many things could one bring up against such slander of this mimic actor, as would be clear to anyone. And even if the words are not polished for refutation, it will be sufficient for shame merely to know that these things are believed among them, being inconsistent and having no power. For he destroys the first things in the second, and the second things he utters are different from the first. For at one time he wishes the world to have come from God, at another from the rulers and for God to have no cause in the world, but the world being destroyed, at another time he says the firmament is the skins of the rulers, at another that they are crucified above in the pole, and that they run down and form clouds and are angry and driven to frenzy at the sight of the virgin and at the beauty of the youth. 33. And O what great shame. For what is more wicked than this, more unpleasant and more shameful, than for the spirit of truth to shape itself as a female, and at another to appear to the rulers in male form? For it is a shameful outrage for a man to be made effeminate and to exist in the form of a female; and most shameful again for a woman to be made masculine and to bear 3.73 the form of a man. And how could it not, being a spirit of virtue and divine, be found rather to be insulted by this fabricator Manes? But how are those who have been flayed driven to frenzy? Tell me, you. And how after being crucified were they flayed? And if they are crucified, how do they run upon the disappearing power? Who will endure the blasphemer, who decrees that we are fed from the sweat of rulers and that the rain is sent down to us from a shameful secretion? And from where does he himself drink a beverage, drawing it from rains with his own disciples? And how would he not be ridiculous, being overcome by bodily need, drinking sweat? For indeed sin exists in different forms, but the punishment will not be as great for the one who sins unwillingly as for the one who commits the sin with willing intent. For other men, even if it were so—which may it not be; for the madman imagines it—except that being ignorant of sweat and shameful secretions, they draw water and drink, being pardonable, they obtain mercy rather than he who with conscience, pricked in vain, through the defeat of his weakness draws from the same beverages and from the other uses of the flesh. 34. And there are many things in which this man with a mouth of falsehood deceived those who were persuaded by him. For what with him is not ridiculous? The belief that the seeds of herbs and produce and legumes are souls; so that also

Ταῦτά ἐστιν ἃ παρεθέμην ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἀρχελάου βιβλίου τοῦ προειρημένου. καὶ οὕτω συνέστησε τὸ αὐτοῦ διδασκαλεῖον ζιζανιώδους ἐν κόσμῳ σπορᾶς, καὶ τὰ ζιζανιώδη τῆς αὐτοῦ διδασκαλίας ἐξεμέσας. πόσα δέ τις ὑπενέγκοι πρὸς τὴν τοσαύτην διαβολὴν τοῦ μιμολόγου τούτου, ὡς παντί που δῆλον εἴη. κἄν τε μὴ ἐπιξεσθῶσιν αἱ λέξεις πρὸς ἀνατροπήν, ἀρκέσει εἰς αἰσχύνην μόνον τὸ εἰδέναι ὅτι ταῦτα παρ' αὐτοῖς νομιτεύεται, ἀσύστατα ὄντα καὶ μηδεμίαν δύναμιν ἔχοντα. τὰ μὲν γὰρ πρῶτα ἐν τοῖς δευτέροις καταλύει, τὰ δὲ δεύτερα ἕτερα παρὰ τὰ πρῶτα φθέγγεται. ὁτὲ μὲν γὰρ τὸν κόσμον ἐκ θεοῦ θέλει γεγενῆσθαι, ὁτὲ δὲ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων καὶ τὸν θεὸν μὴ ἔχειν εἰς τὸν κόσμον τι αἴτιον, ἀλλὰ ἀπολλύμενον τὸν κόσμον, ποτὲ δὲ τὸ στερέωμα δέρματα εἶναι τῶν ἀρχόντων φάσκει, ποτὲ δὲ σταυροῦσθαι αὐτὰ ἄνω ἐν τῷ πόλῳ, κατατρέχειν τε καὶ συννεφεῖν καὶ ὀργᾶν καὶ ἐξοιστροῦσθαι πρὸς τὴν τῆς παρθένου θέαν καὶ πρὸς τὴν ὡραιότητα τοῦ νεανία. 33. Καὶ ὢ πολλῆς αἰσχύνης. τί γὰρ τούτου μοχθηρότερον, ἀηδέστερόν τε καὶ αἰσχρότερον, τοῦ θήλειαν ἑαυτὸ ἀνατυποῦν τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας, ὁτὲ δὲ ἀρρενοειδῶς ὀπτάνεσθαι τοῖς ἄρχουσιν; αἰσχρὸν μὲν γὰρ παροινεῖν τὸ ἄνδρα θηλιεύεσθαι καὶ ἐν θηλείας μορφῇ ὑπάρχειν· αἰσχρότατον δὲ πάλιν τὸ τὰ γύναια ἀνδρίζεσθαι καὶ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς φέρειν 3.73 τὸ σχῆμα. καὶ πῶς οὐχί, ἀρετῆς ὂν πνεῦμα καὶ θεῖον, ὑβριζόμενον μᾶλλον εὑρεθήσεται παρὰ τοῦ πλαστουργοῦ τούτου Μάνη; πῶς δὲ οἱ ἐκδαρέντες οἰστροῦνται; λέγε μοι, ὦ οὗτος. πῶς δὲ μετὰ τὸ σταυρωθῆναι ἐξεδάρησαν; εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐσταύρωνται, πῶς ἐπιτρέχουσι τῇ ἀφαντουμένῃ δυνάμει; τίς δὲ ἀνέξεται τοῦ βλασφήμου, τοῦ ἀπὸ ἱδρώτων ἀρχόντων ἡμᾶς τρέφεσθαι ὁριζομένου καὶ ἀπὸ ἐκκρίσεως αἰσχρότητος τὸν ὑετὸν ἡμῖν καταπέμπεσθαι; πόθεν δὲ αὐτὸς πόμα πίνει, ἐξ ὑετῶν ἀρυόμενος μετὰ τῶν ἰδίων αὐτοῦ μαθητῶν; πῶς δὲ οὐ καταγέλαστος εἴη, ἡττώμενος τῇ τῶν σωματικῶν χρείᾳ ἱδρῶτας πίνων; καὶ γὰρ ἁμαρτία διάφορος μὲν ὑπάρχει, οὐ τοσαύτη δὲ ἔσται ἡ τιμωρία τῷ ἀκουσίως ἁμαρτάνοντι ὡς τῷ μετὰ ἑκουσίας γνώμης τὸ ἁμάρτημα ἐπιτελοῦντι. οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἄλλοι ἄνθρωποι, εἰ καὶ οὕτως ἦν ὅπερ μὴ γένοιτο· φαντάζεται γὰρ ὁ ἐμμανής, πλὴν ὅτι ἀγνοοῦντες ἱδρῶτας καὶ ἐκκρίσεις αἰσχρὰσ, ὅτι ὑδρεύονται καὶ πίνουσιν, σύγγνωστοι ὄντες μᾶλλον ἐλέους τυγχάνουσιν ἤπερ ὁ μετὰ τοῦ συνειδότος, νενυγμένος μάτην, διὰ τὴν ἧτταν τῆς ἀσθενείας αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν αὐτῶν πομάτων ἀρυόμενος καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς χρήσεων. 34.
