counsel and, having immediately renounced the marriage with his betrothed, he cohabits with his stepmother. 8.20.22 But when the betrothed of Radigis learned these things, not bearing the calamity of the affair, she set out to punish him for the insult against her. 8.20.23 For chastity is considered so honorable among the barbarians there, that indeed when only the name of marriage has occurred among them, the deed not having followed, 8.20.24 a woman is thought to have been debauched. So at first, sending some of her kinsmen to him on an embassy, she inquired for what reason indeed he had insulted her, since she had neither been debauched nor had done anything else 8.20.25 displeasing to him. But when she was able to accomplish nothing in this way, taking on a masculine spirit, she proceeded to the deeds of war. 8.20.26 Therefore, having immediately gathered four hundred ships and having put on them an army of not less than ten myriads of fighting men, she herself led this army 8.20.27 against the Varni. For not only are they unpractised in riding, but it happens that they do not even know what a horse is, since on this island they do not see a horse even so much as in a picture. But if ever it should happen that some of them, on an embassy or for some other reason, visit the Romans or the Franks or some other people who have horses, and it should be necessary for them to be carried on horses there, they are by no means able to leap up upon them, but other men, lifting them up, put them on the horses, and when they wish to get away from there, again lifting them, upon the ground 8.20.31 they set them down. And there indeed, when the Angili arrived quickly, both sides joined in hand-to-hand battle, but were utterly defeated, 8.20.34 the Varni. And many of them fell in this struggle, but the rest with the king all turned to flight, and the Angili, having pursued them for a short distance, as is customary for foot-soldiers, withdrew to the 8.20.35 camp. Whom the maiden reproached as they returned to her, and she reviled her brother most bitterly, asserting that nothing worthy of account had been done by the army, since they had not brought Radigis to her alive. 8.20.36 And having chosen from them the most warlike, she sent them out immediately, having ordered them to bring the 8.20.37 man as a captive of the spear by any means necessary. And they, carrying out her command, went about searching through all the places there with exactness, until they found Radigis hiding in a thick wood; and having bound him, they brought him back to the 8.20.38 girl. And he, on the one hand, stood before her eyes, both trembling and suspecting that he would die right away indeed by a most pitiful death; but she, unexpectedly, neither killed him nor did anything else unpleasant, but having reproached him for the insult against her, she inquired of the man for what reason indeed, having disregarded their agreements, he had gone to bed with another woman, and this when his betrothed had not been debauch8.20.39ed toward him.
