he wrote a resignation, that being unworthy he was yielding the throne to whoever wanted it. When such a resignation was brought before the synod, Tryphon was deposed from the church, 2.315 greatly lamenting the deceit and blaming the one on the first throne. And after one year and five months (for so much time was lacking for Theophylact's age to be complete for the laying on of hands for the high priesthood) in February, in the 2nd indiction, Theophylact the son of the emperor was ordained patriarch. A certain Basil the Macedonian, proclaiming himself to be Constantine the son of Doukas, deceived many and drew them to himself, and wandering about he stirred up and threw the cities into confusion and incited them to rebellion; but having been seized by a certain tourmarches, Elephantinos by name, and brought before the emperor, he was deprived of one of his hands. Then again, when he was released, putting a bronze hand on himself and having fashioned an enormous sword, he went about the Opsikion, deceiving the more simple-minded that he himself was Constantine the son of Doukas. Therefore, having gathered a great force, he started a rebellion. And having seized the fortress which is called Plateia Petra, he stored every kind of thing in it, from which setting out he plundered and pillaged whatever came his way. The emperor therefore, sending an army against him, captured both him and those with him. And having interrogated them at length to learn if any of those in authority were accomplices, finally, having found out nothing of importance, he handed this man over to the fire in the so-called Amastrianon. The emperor Romanos also took a wife for his son Stephen, Anna the daughter of Gabalas; and at the same time as the nuptial crown, the diadem of the empire was placed upon her. 2.316 There was also an invasion of the Turks against the Romans, in the month of April, in the 7th indiction, and they overran the entire west as far as the City. So the patrikios and protovestiarios Theophanes was sent out, and made an exchange with them, the emperor sparing no expense for the ransom of the captives. And a certain maiden named Helen was married to Constantine, the remaining son of the emperor, tracing her lineage from the family of the Armeniacs, daughter of Adrianos the patrikios; who dying a short time after, he joined to him another, Theophano by name, descended from the family of Mamas.
And in the fourteenth indiction, in the month of June, an attack against the City was made by a Russian fleet of ten thousand ships. Therefore the patrikios and protovestiarios Theophanes went out against them with the fleet, and anchored at the Hieron, while they lay in wait at the Pharos and on the coast beyond. Therefore, watching for an opportunity, he suddenly attacked them, and both broke up their formation and burned many of their ships to ashes with the prepared fire, and completely routed the rest. The surviving Rus crossed over to the east and put in at the so-called Sgora. And Bardas the patrikios, the son of Phokas, patrolling the coasts with cavalry and picked men, encountered a considerable detachment of them sent out to gather provisions, and routed and slaughtered them. And indeed also the domestikos of the scholae, Kourkouas, appearing swiftly with the tagmata, and finding them scattered and wandering here and there, 2.317 treated them badly. The evil things these men did before they were defeated surpass all tragedy; for some of those they captured they crucified, others they nailed to the ground, and others, setting them up like targets, they shot down with arrows. As many of the captured as had been deemed worthy of the priesthood, they drove sharp nails through their heads. And they set fire to not a few holy temples. But these things were before; but when, as was said above, having been defeated at sea and not a little badly treated on land, having drawn together they remained quiet in their ships, and their provisions were already failing them, they planned to return to their own lands, but they feared the neighboring fleet and the
