they were straining to have a similar one also towards him, and they promised that they would attach themselves to him and would create a great domain for him. Then Boichnas the Caesar, having sent a message, reported both that everything they needed had been prepared, and that he had persuaded the ruler of Pherae to join with them, and that he was prepared to hand over the city to the Kralaina herself and for ten thousand pieces of money; and they asked him to come to them as quickly as possible, after first giving a deadline for his arrival. And the emperor, being exceedingly pleased at the message and having promised them great things for their goodwill and zeal towards him, also gave a deadline, that he would arrive in thirty days. For he thought that many days would be sufficient both to gather the existing Roman army and to summon an allied force from the east from Orchanes his 3.324 son-in-law. So he gave such an agreement to the Triballians who were summoning him; and having immediately sent an embassy to Orchanes the son-in-law, he requested an army and summoned the Romans by letters. And so it happened that near Abydos, for some other reasons, the ambassadors, meeting Orchanes as he was tarrying, delivered the embassy. And Orchanes immediately—for as it happened an army of barbarians of about five thousand had been gathered from other satrapies and was needing to be transported to Thrace, having invaded Mysia for the purpose of plunder—and having mixed in some of his own men and having appointed one of his own generals over them, ordered the emperor's ambassadors to take them and cross over, while being ignorant of the reason for the emperor's campaign against the Triballians, but thinking it was simply for the purpose of plundering the barbarians. But the emperor, seeing that the army of the barbarians had arrived so quickly, and learning also that it had been gathered from many satrapies, was full of alarm and despondency, on the one hand suspecting the barbarians, that being free from fear they would do nothing according to his will, by which they might have been moderately persuaded to follow in an orderly fashion and with discipline, and on the other hand that the Roman army was unable to be gathered; for they had been told to be with him in thirty days. And when he tried to restrain the barbarians and to spend time, they threatened to overrun his land, 3.325 if he did not set out with them against the enemy very quickly. And being beset by difficulty on all sides, for on the one hand he considered it unsafe not to have his own force following, and he feared the attack of the barbarians, which they threatened, as being about to do the greatest harm, since everyone in the summer season was turned to their work and scattered in the fields. He chose rather to campaign himself with the retainers who were with him. And having revealed the secret of the invasion to the leaders of the barbarians, he requested them not to harm the cities that were coming over, nor the land, but having kept that untouched, to turn against the truly hostile one, with him providing guides. And on account of such goodwill, he promised to provide much money to the barbarians. And they insisted that they would do everything according to his will and would obey in everything exactly. And immediately he set out with them, having a few Romans around him. And he sent men to Boichnas the Caesar to report that he had marched out contrary to the agreement, having been compelled by the army, which would not tolerate waiting for the opportune moment. But he, being away from the city which he ruled, and it was Drama, when he learned the news from the emperor, at the same time having also encountered a certain Triballian army, which was coming from the Kralis to his mother in Pherae, he turned back to Pherae with the army. And he had a mind to consult together with the other conspirators there 3.326 about what it was necessary to do in the present circumstances. But the barbarians, when they were near Pherae with the emperor, the majority of them, having disregarded the agreements, turned to plundering and ravaged the whole countryside without fear, while the emperor was vexed and doing everything by which he thought he would prevent the barbarians from harming his friends; but as many as were with the emperor and the general, seeing the army of the Triballians approaching, with which Boichnas the Caesar also was, rushed to engage in battle.
