and purple, and scarlet, and the other colors, but should they be asked by us about the quality of the form and the color of each quality, they can neither say nor be taught by us, but only by speech they persuade their own mind, and they deceive their listeners, as if they knew perfectly about the distinction, * and even if they speak in word, they possess ignorance through incomprehensibility. Thus this one also comes to us speaking about God and indeed mockingly proclaims the corruption of the mute and deaf and blind virgin, he himself being more corrupted according to his own blasphemy and possessing ignorance as a blindness from birth, speaking indeed about God, but representing with words * and then preparing his disciples for shamelessness; for nothing is undared by them. Therefore they blaspheme the names of prophets and apostles, whenever, being refuted by some, they are hard pressed, immediately running away and leaping away and saying: 'This the apostle said as a man'; and at another time: 'Why do you bring me the things of the Old Testament?' And it is not surprising according to the things said by the Savior, that "If they called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more his household?" If indeed they deny the Lord himself and his true glory, how much more his prophets and apostles? But still, having been raised to greater madness, those discipled by him and their successor, a certain Eunomius, falsely so called, still to this day 3.414 being about in life a great evil, * a daring act; for he rebaptizes those already baptized, not only those coming to him from the orthodox and heresies, but also those from the Arians themselves. And he rebaptizes them into the name of an uncreated God and into the name of a created Son and into the name of a sanctifying Spirit created by the created Son. And so that their whole workshop might be seen to be of dice-playing and of the stage and of the theater, that the faith proclaimed by them is no longer faith, but, so to speak, a workshop of mimes, some have affirmed that he baptizes those being rebaptized headfirst, with their feet up and head down. And so under oath he compels them to swear not to desert such a heresy devised by him. And they say that this same Aetius, after the death of Constantius, having been recalled from exile by Julian who became emperor, while still a deacon of his own heresy, was advanced to the episcopacy by a bishop of his own heresy. These are the things that have come to us concerning Aetius and his disciples, to whom some gave the name of Anomoeans because he held the heresy of Arius even more terribly and excessively; which, having gone through in detail as far as possible in God, like a many-footed centipede and the reptile called the millipede, having trodden down with the foot of truth and crushed with the true confession of the Only-Begotten, as is our custom giving thanks to God, calling upon his power for the help of our weakness, let us proceed to the remaining ones in succession, according to our ability and our comprehension, O beloved, calling upon him, as I said, the Master, to be present with us for their exposition and for their refutation, so that in his power we may be able to fulfill the promise of our smallness and insignificance. 3.416 Against the Dimoerites, by some called Apollinarians, who do not confess the complete incarnation of Christ, 57, but in the series 77. 1. Next to these, again, some laborious expression alien to the faith has sprung up for us, pre-empting life, from what cause I cannot say, but that * the devil who always disturbs human nature and wages war, so to speak, might not allow, casting his bitter poisons into wonderful foods, and as if mixing bitterness in honey, so through some of those at the extreme
