12. On the other hand His works in creation are acts of making and not a birth through generation. For the heaven is not a son, neither is the earth a son, nor is the world a birth; for of these it is said, All things were made through Him810 St. John i. 3.; and by the prophet, The heavens are the works of Thy hands811 Ps. cii. 25.; and by the same prophet, Neglect not the works of Thy hands812 Ib. cxxxviii. 8.. Is the picture a son of the painter, or the sword a son of the smith or the house a son of the architect? These are the works of their making: but He alone is the Son of the Father Who is born of the Father.
12. Operi non convenit filii nomen.---Factura autem opera creaturarum sunt, non generationis nativitas. Non enim coelum filius, aut terra filius, aut mundus nativitas est, de quibus dictum est, Omnia per eum facta sunt (Joan. I, 3), et per Prophetam, Opera manuum tuarum sunt coeli (Psal. CI, 26): et per eumdem, Opera manuum tuarum non omittas (Psal. 0440C CXXXVII, 8). Numquid pictori pictura filius, aut gladius fabro filius aut architecto domus filius? Haec enim opera efficientium sunt; at vero patri solus, qui ex eo nascitur, filius est.
