But we are accused of lying, and together with us the doctrine preached by the Apostle is attacked, because while it confesses the birth, it asserts the eternity of that birth: the result being that, while the birth bears witness to an Author of being, the assertion of eternity in the mystery of the divine birth transgresses the limits of human thought. For there is brought forward against us the declaration of Wisdom concerning itself, when it taught that it was created in these words: The Lord created Me for the beginning of His ways831 Prov. viii. 22 (LXX.)..

Objicitur, Sapientiam se creatam testari.---Sed accusamur mendacii, et una nobiscum doctrina apostolicae praedicationis arguitur, nativitatem quidem confessa, sed aeternitatem nativitatis professa: ut et nativitas testaretur auctorem, et aeternitas in sacramento divinae nativitatis sensum humanae opinionis excederet. Profertum enim adversum nos Sapientiae de se protestatio, quae creatam se docuerit his dictis: Dominus creavit me in initium viarum suarum (Prov. VIII, 22).
