having, and having had a human soul in truth, a human mind in truth, not as we affirm 3.516 the mind to be a hypostasis, as others say; but all things undefiled by sin, a «mouth» that did not lie, «lips that spoke no guile», a heart that did not incline to provocation, a mind that did not turn aside to what it ought not, flesh that did not work the pleasures of the flesh; perfect God from above, not having come to dwell in a man, but he himself wholly having become man, not changed in nature, but having included at the same time with his divinity his own incarnation, having come to be in a virgin's womb in truth, carried for the appointed time, born through the channels of birth without shame, undefiledly, unpollutedly, brought up and embraced by both Symeon and Anna, carried by Mary, having walked on foot, having traveled, having become a child, having matured in age, having all things in himself in perfection, counted in the number of years, carried in the womb for a number of months, «born of a woman, born under the law», having come to the Jordan, baptized by John, not in need of washing, but because of the consequence of the incarnation under the law, not disturbing what is just, so that «all righteousness», as he himself said, «might be fulfilled», in order to show that he put on true flesh, a true incarnation, descending into the waters, giving rather than receiving, providing rather than needing, illuminating them, empowering them as a type of the things to be perfected in him, so that those who have believed in him in truth and hold the faith of the truth may learn that he truly became man, was truly baptized, and thus through his consent they too, coming, may receive the power of his descent, and be enlightened by his illumination, the saying in the prophet being fulfilled, for a change of power, for the provision of salvation of the power of bread being received from Jerusalem and of the strength of water; 16. but here in Christ the power of the bread and the strength of the water being made strong, so that bread may not become power for us, but the power of bread; and the bread is indeed food, but the power in it is for giving life; and not that the water might only cleanse us, but that in the strength of the water through faith and action and hope and the perfection of the mysteries and the name, the power of holiness may become for us the perfection of salvation. having come up from the Jordan, hearing 3.517 the voice of the Father, * in the hearing of the disciples who were present to show who was being testified to and of the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a dove, as we have said in many heresies, so that the Trinity might not be thought a confusion, the Spirit being configured in its own hypostasis, the Spirit settling and «coming upon him», so that the one being testified to might be seen, so that the holy flesh, being beloved and well-pleasing to the Father and the Spirit, might be testified to, so that the Father might be proclaimed as well-pleased with the incarnate presence of the Son, so that the true Son might be seen and what was said might be fulfilled: «and after these things he was seen on earth, and conversed with men»; having come up from the Jordan, and clearly and truly tempted by the devil in the wilderness, and having hungered afterward because of the consequence and truth of the incarnate presence and having chosen disciples and preached the truth and healed the passions, having slept, hungered, traveled, worked divine signs, raised the dead, granted sight to the blind, strengthened the lame and paralytic; as he preached the gospel, the truth, the kingdom of the heavens, his own love for mankind and that of the Father and of the Holy Spirit. 17.
