Of our holy father Amphilochius, bishop of Iconium, a discourse against heretics on the text: Father if it is possible let pass from me the

this cup.

Again as a lawful soldier I undertake the battle against the heretics, with Stephen the general of piety as my commander. For just as when Moses prayed, Joshua routed the enemies, so I too, with the martyr cooperating, subdue the enemies of the truth. I say these things not trusting in an abundance of words, but relying on the prayer of the martyr; wherefore I also boldly take up these words. For I do not dread their bombast in words. I am unafraid of the arguments of their crafty deceit. For I have learned not to fear a fear where there was no fear. For they say that Christ fears and dreads death, but we, for Christ's sake, as many days as we live in the flesh, so many times do we choose to die, that with bared head we may celebrate the triumph of the truth. Therefore, as one already having the winning vote, I proceed against them. For Christ encourages me through the prophet, saying: Son of man, be not afraid of their face, because they will provoke you round about. For in the midst of scorpions you dwell. For I do not fear stinging scorpions. For I do not walk with bare foot; for I have the sandals of the gospel of peace, so that even if I am bitten I may not be harmed. And having shod, he says, your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Come then, with the sandals of peace let us tread upon the many-formed head of the heretics, so that through the means by which we fearlessly proceed against them, we may teach them how greatly they err in attributing fear and cowardice to the nature of the only-begotten. For those who think and speak of all things uncritically and irrationally, and who do not understand "Father if it is possible, let this cup pass," condemn Christ for cowardice and say that he is wanting and inferior for praying to the father and seeking deliverance from the impending necessity. Since, therefore, to the dishonor of God they slander the word of God, and to the rejection of the Spirit they parade the letter, mocking and disparaging the economy of Christ, and with cleverness of phrasing and eloquence of words they cover their venomous bites, plundering the salvation of the more simple, come, as those unskilled in words, let us call upon the Word of God himself, that he, becoming the interpreter of his own words, may expose their folly, and establish our mind. Tell us the meaning of what has been said, Lord, unfold the leaf of the letter and show the fruit of the spirit, that we may not, by attending to the letter, die, but that by running to the spirit we may enjoy life. For the letter kills, but the spirit gives life. Teach us as a child, but discipline the heretics as fools; for you are a disciplinarian of fools and a teacher of children. To us as infants bare the breast of grace and giving the nipple of the spirit. Let the pure milk of the evangelical teaching be poured out. But make manifest the folly of the heretics. For if they were not fools, they would not have woven a dogma of blasphemy for the destruction of your divinity. For the fool, it says, has said in his heart, there is no God. Lay bare their pretext of impiety, that the drama of hypocrisy may be revealed. Show how for this reason they bear your name,
