BOOK OF GENESIS.
77.1176 Cursed is the ground in thy works. The ground cursed in Adam's works is the flesh of the earthly mind; whose works are the passions of dishonor. Therefore it is also cursed. This flesh yields to him, as thorns, cares and anxieties; and as thistles, temptations and dangers, according to reason and anger and desire. And, In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread, may be understood also concerning action and contemplation; for through the labor of the practical he eats the bread of the contemplative. Cain, then, is the mind of the flesh, which Adam first begot through disobedience; Abel, however, is the mind of the spirit, which the same Adam later begot through repentance. Therefore, when the mind of the spirit according to Abel, before it has reached a perfect state, goes out together with the mind of the flesh according to Cain into the field, I mean the breadth of natural contemplation, it is killed by it. For it is good, before reaching a perfect state, not to touch natural contemplation, lest in seeking spiritual principles from sensible things ..... collecting passions. For in the imperfect, the visible forms of sensible things have more power over the senses than the principles of things that have come to be, which are hidden in the visible forms, have over the soul. Whoever slays Cain shall loose seven vengeances. Cain is the thought of gluttony. And seven vengeances, that is, things worthy of punishment. The thought of fornication and of avarice, and that of sadness, and that of anger, and that of acedia, and that of vainglory and that of pride. He, therefore, who has killed gluttony through continence has killed with it also the passions that follow it, having paralyzed their connections. 77.1177 Concerning the building of the tower. Those who were building the tower of Chalane, having moved from the land of light in the east, I mean from the one and true knowledge of God, came to the land of Shinar, which is interpreted Blasphemous teeth, and having fallen into many opinions concerning God, they put together the principle of each opinion as if it were bricks, and built, as it were a tower, the polytheistic atheism. Just as the Lord did not appear to Abraham while he was dwelling in his own land; but when he was called and went out, and came to the land that was shown to him, He appeared and gave him the great promises, and allowed him to build an altar and to sacrifice; so also to us who remain in the world, and in its structural pleasures, no illumination comes from God; but to those who obey the divine commands, and arrive where the Lord commands, He reveals knowledge concerning Himself, as far as is possible; He provides great hopes, and strengthens our mind; so as to raise up to Him an altar, the heart; and to sacrifice good deeds, and spiritual contemplations. And there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down into Egypt. When the mind of each one falls into a famine of divine thoughts and of the food that spiritually nourishes the soul,
