Contra Julianum imperatorem FRAGMENTA EX RELIQUIS S. CURILLI CONTRA JULIANUM L IBRIS QUI
DESIDERANTUR. Of the blessed Cyril from the 11th book of those against Julian.
It is true to say that the proud and scornful man, the boaster, will accomplish nothing according to the voice of the prophet; for conceit is the cutting off of progress, according to the common saying that is in the mouths of the many. From the same book. Conceit is the cutting off of progress. For one might more easily instruct 76.1060 the one who acknowledges his ignorance in things not yet understood; but for the one who thinks he knows, the very act of thinking he knows renders him unwise and ignorant in every way; for he does not accept the words of those who teach.
From the 12th of those against Julian. The judge of the contest does not simply grant the exceptional honors to the willing athletes, but rather he distributes the prizes according to the successes of the contestants. From the same. To distribute equal things to the unequal is the greatest injustice. From the 12th of those against Julian. It seems best and wise to me not to miss the opportune moment for action. From the 12th of those against Julian. To speak ill, one would not choose, I think is evident to everyone; nevertheless this is common and vulgar.
From the 14th book against Julian. It is possible for every man to be held in high esteem
and to live splendidly. From the same. Man is self-summoned and goes willingly to whatsoever seems good to him; for it seemed thus good to the Creator of all, so that for those who have chosen to do good, praise must follow, and for those going the other path, being justly mocked by all may follow. From the 14th book of those against Julian. The Psalmist, elegantly pointing out the confusion of this life and the bitter overflow of its affairs, said, "This sea, the great and wide." From the 14th of those against Julian. The sharp ways to salvation are somewhat obscure and not clear to all. From the 15th of those against Julian. The human mind is governed by its own will, and proceeds voluntarily to whatever must be done; for this also seemed right to God, the master craftsman of all; so that even if one of us should come to be in participation of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him through holy baptism, he is not for this reason deprived of living according to his own judgment, and as it seems good to him; but as if with free reins he is inclined towards both the good, and its opposite.
From the 15th of those against Julian. To slander is always somehow swift-running, and
lack of restraint in words is in many; but it is necessary, I think, for the denunciations which one might make against anything, for the proofs to follow; but if the one who has chosen to accuse is weak in this, he will carry away the reputation of being a slanderer.
From the 15th book of those against Julian. To be well-dressed is only boyish, and has pleasure only in appearance, and deceives the eyes.
From the 16th of those against Julian. For those accustomed to farm best, it would reasonably
follow that they must be praised. From the 16th book of those against Julian. That also according to the achievements of each is the payment of the reward; rewards equal to the toils will be distributed by God to those who have chosen to act virtuously;
Contra Julianum imperatorem FRAGMENTA EX RELIQUIS S. CURILLI CONTRA JULIANUM L IBRIS QUI
DESIDERANTUR.
