Fragments from the book against Diodore of Tarsus
From Cyril, in a homily entitled concerning 'Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven;' but of that day and hour no one knows. But when he says this also, he does not in every way mean himself; for he did not add precisely "Nor the Son of God," but indefinitely says, "nor the son"; so that you might understand something of this sort: the disciples were eager to learn everything with precision, and they attempted, so to speak, even to investigate the very depths of the Lord. but the matter was far beyond them. Therefore, so that he might not seem in some way to grieve those who were genuine by forbidding the explanation which they wanted to learn, he says obscurely, "But of that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels, nor the son, but only the Father;" so that you may understand thus: if a man has also been called to adoption and shown to be a new son, still let him not seek things that are beyond nature, nor think it right to learn what the Father has not revealed even to the angels; for if an angel does not know, neither will a man know, even if he has been called to adoption.

Κυρίλλου ἐν ὁμιλίᾳ ἐπιγεγραμμένῃ εἰς τὸ Εὐθέως δὲ μετὰ τὴν θλίψιν τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκείνων ὁ ἥλιος σκοτισθήσεται καὶ ἡ σελήνη οὐ δώσει τὸ φέγγος αὐτῆς καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες πεσοῦνται ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· περὶ δὲ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ τῆς ὥρας οὐδεὶς οἶδεν. Ἀλλ' ὅταν καὶ τοῦτο λέγῃ, οὐ πάντως ἑαυτὸν σημαίνει· οὔτε γὰρ προσέθηκεν ἀκριβῶς Οὐδὲ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἀλλ' ἀπολελυμένως Οὐδὲ ὁ υἱός φησιν· ἵνα τοιοῦτόν τι νοῇς· ἐσπούδαζον κατὰ ἀκρίβειαν πάντα μανθάνειν οἱ μαθηταὶ, καὶ ἐπεχείρουν ἵνα οὕτως εἴπω καὶ αὐτὰ περιεργάζεσθαι τὰ βάθη τοῦ Κυρίου. ἀλλ' ἦν τὸ πρᾶγμα λίαν ὑπὲρ αὐτούς. ἵνα τοίνυν μὴ ἀπαγορεύσας τὴν ἐξήγησιν ὡς ἠβούλοντο μαθεῖν, δόξῃ πως λυπεῖν τοὺς γνησιεύοντας, ἐπεσκιασμένως φησί "Περὶ δὲ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ἢ τῆς ὥρας, οὐδεὶς οἶδεν, οὐδὲ "οἱ ἄγγελοι, οὐδὲ ὁ υἱὸς, εἰ μὴ ὁ πατήρ·" ἵνα νοῇς οὕτως· εἰ καὶ κέκληται πρὸς υἱοθεσίαν ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ υἱὸς ἀνεδείχθη νέος, ἀλλὰ μὴ ζητείτω τὰ ὑπὲρ φύσιν, μηδὲ ἀξιούτω μαθεῖν ἅπερ μηδὲ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις ἀπεκάλυψεν ὁ Πατήρ· εἰ δὲ ἄγγελος οὐκ οἶδεν, οὐδὲ ἄνθρωπος εἴσεται κἂν εἰ κέκληται πρὸς υἱοθεσίαν.
