126 Timothy, the bishop of Ephesus appointed by the blessed Paul, was from the Gentiles, not from the circumcision, to whom Paul also bears much witness, admonishing him to guard the good confession of the gift given to him, who also gloriously bore witness there. 127 Titus, bishop of Crete, preached the gospel of the Lord to the Cretans themselves and to the surrounding islands, and having died there was buried. Crescens preached the gospel of the Lord in Gaul and is buried there. The eunuch of Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, preached the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in Arabia Felix and on the island of Taprobane and in the whole red region, and the story goes that he also gloriously bore witness and was buried there; and his resting place is an unconquerable weapon for the faithful against wicked barbarians, a refuge driving away diseases and working cures even to this day. From the seventy apostles of the Savior have come, as Clement relates in the fifth of the Hypotyposeis, Barnabas, 128 Sosthenes, Cephas, a namesake of Peter, Matthias who was numbered with the eleven, Eubulus, Pudens, Crispus, in the second, Barsabbas and Linus, whom Paul mentions writing to Timothy, Thaddeus, Cleopas and those with him.
These are the names of the appointed deacons. 1. Stephen the protomartyr. 2. Philip. 3. Prochorus. 4. Nicanor. 5. Timon. 6. Parmenas. 7. and Nicolas. And of the seventy, the foremost are these: Paul, Mark, Luke, Titus, the eunuch of Candace, John the Baptist.
It is necessary to know how the four gospels were written. That after the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ 129 that according to Matthew was after 8 years, that according to Mark after 12 years, that according to John after 30 years in the time of Domitian the emperor, that according to Luke after 15 years. The gospel according to Matthew, having been written by him in the Hebrew dialect, was published in Jerusalem, and was interpreted by John. That according to Mark was dictated by Peter in Rome. That according to Luke was dictated by Paul in Rome. That according to John in the times of Trajan was dictated by John himself in the time of Commodus, it was written on the island of Patmos. And that according to Luke by Luke, being a disciple of the apostle Paul, whom the same apostle mentions in a certain epistle, writing: Luke, the beloved physician, greets you, and the same evangelist also wrote the Acts of the Holy Apostles. It is not possible for them to be either more or fewer in number. For the gospel according to John recounts His sovereign and active and glorious generation from the Father 130: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, all things were made through him; for this reason in the likeness of an eagle. But that according to Luke, since it has a priestly character, began from Zacharias the priest, saying: There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah, since according to the old tradition of the law the priests offered bulls; for this reason also its form is depicted as a calf. And Matthew explains his generation according to man, The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of Abraham, and again Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise, whence also his gospel is represented in human form. But Mark made his beginning from the prophetic spirit coming from on high in the heavens, saying, The beginning of the gospel, as it is written in the prophets: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, for this reason showing the prophetic image of the gospel.
