THE NAMES OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES WHO PREACHED THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST AND HOW THEY MET THEIR END.

OF EPIPHANIUS.

1. Simon Peter, the chief of the apostles, as appears from his epistles, preached the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in Pontus and Gala 108 tia and Cappadocia and Bithynia and in Italy, Asia and in Illyricum, and later in Rome under Emperor Nero he is crucified upside down, having himself requested to suffer thus, and he is buried in Rome itself three days before the Calends of July, which is the 5th of Epiphi.

2. And Andrew his brother, as those before us have handed down, preached to the Scythians and Sogdians and Gorsinoi and in great Sebastopolis, where is the fortress of Apsarus and the port of Hyssus and the river Phasis, where dwell 109 Aethiopians, and he is buried in Patras of Achaia, having been bound to a cross by Aegeas, the king of Patras.

3. And James the son of Zebedee, the brother of John the evangelist, preached the Gospel of Christ to the twelve tribes of the dispersion, and he was put to death by the sword by Herod the tetrarch of the Jews, and was buried there in Judaea.

4. And John his brother, preached the Gospel of Christ in Asia, and having been exiled by Trajan, the emperor of the Romans, to the island of Patmos for the word of the Lord, while there he wrote the Gospel according to John, and published it through Gaius 110 the host, and after the death of Trajan he returned from the island to Ephesus and there he buried himself alive, being 120 years old, by the will of God.

5. And Philip the apostle; he was from Bethsaida, from the village of Peter and Andrew, and he preached the gospel in upper Phrygia, and he died in Hierapolis and is buried there gloriously with his own.

6. And Bartholomew the apostle preached the Gospel of Christ to the Indians called Fortunate and having written for them the holy Gospel according to Matthew in their own dialect he fell asleep in Albania, a city of great Armenia, and was buried there.

111 7. And Thomas the apostle, as tradition holds, was from the city of Paneas in Galilee, and he preached the gospel of the Lord to the Parthians and Medes, and to the Persians and Germanoi and Hyrcanians and Indians and Bactrians and Magi, he fell asleep in the city of Calamina in India.

8. And Matthew the evangelist was from Jerusalem and there he wrote the gospel of the Lord in the Hebrew dialect, and he gave it to the holy apostles and James the brother of the Lord interpreted it, and he fell asleep in Hierapolis of Parthia and is buried there.

112 9. James surnamed Thaddeus, being the brother of the Lord according to the flesh, who also was first appointed bishop in Jerusalem by the apostles; and on the occasion of disputes with the Jews, having been stoned by them, he fell asleep in Jerusalem and was buried there gloriously near the tomb of the priests. Simon the Zealot, having traversed all Mauretania and the country of the Africans and having preached Christ, and later in Britain having been crucified and perfected by them, is buried there.
